If you want to ease into it, start with simple stuff - like making sure there are no exhaust leaks between the block and the turbo. If all is well there, consider that I started with getting more air in (this precedes a tune in my experience, but others will feel differently about it). I have the AIS and I have many reasons for being glad I have it. If the truck is running good, gauges are your best friend (pyro, boost, transmission temp). They tell you when things are right/wrong and how to manage your driving under heavy loads. THEN the tuner will give you fantastic benefits up to 80 HP boost - I was simply blown away when I first fired up my DP with a 60 HP boost. After you tire of the bennies of 80 HP boost, the 4" exhaust gives you the "I thought the tuner was a bump, but this just keeps getting better" feeling.
Just getting the truck past the high-mile hangover with ordinary repairs/upgrades (like bellowed ups to fix an exhaust leak) will give you returns in economy and power. Don't be afraid to mod - just do it in a monetarily digestable way so you can afford the fuel to drive more because it's so pleasurable. Start simple, and go as the wallet allows - with one ear to the rails here at FTE. Were here for you, brother.
I got the tuner before i did exhaust !.. BIG-BIG MISTAKE !.. My wife understood the benefits of the tuner. If i told her i needed the exhaust before i got the tuner, I would have had both now.. But after countless trips with the camper with no issues, "why do you need the exhaust, truck runs good, I want a new couch ! "
Another lesson learned on that one.
Too funny, and true. My wife really isn't too worried about performance, but when I mentioned braking/decel issues when towing, convinced her it was a good idea.

Wow! A wife that isn't worried about performance? You got a good one there! . Wait, we are still talking about trucks, right??? Ok, now back to stock vs chips

Had a good deal for the F250 at Diesel Parts - DotComDiesel.com , must say that mpg improvement was bit better, but performance made a huge difference in my opinion. Had no other mods before that, probably next cai...
