TS chip - tune differences

Is there a difference between STOCK tuning and a (PHP) chip in the "stock" setting?

How does it work? Does the "stock setting" run from the PCM or is it still running a file from the chipset?

Good question. I believe the stock setting is running from the chip.

Not sure if PHP loads the same calibration for stock that was on the PCM. My previous DP supposedly had a stock file loaded that was selected from a database of all stock calibrations rather than a mirror of the PCM. Subscribed because I'd like to know what PHP does.

My foot tells me it's a different calibration. Throttle control and shift firmness seem to be different.

Maybe they do the same thing DP does. Apparently there are a bunch of Ford calibrations, some much better than others.

My stock tune is a "Modified Stock" tune because of my single shot injectors and BTS trans.

I've used 3 different tuners and the stock settings has alway been different (a little more power) then running with out a chip.

I think my STOCK (non-tune) was better than the PHP 'stock'. Factory shifts were WAY better without a tune.

Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about...

Are there any significant mods to the truck, other than the tuner? My tuner had to deal with the HD4R100 transmission.

Negative. Just the basics; 6637, capped WG line, 4" TB with muffler.

I believe most tuners do tweak the tuning slightly in stock mode. I am having similar issues with my new tuner I think. What is your computers PCM code? Mine is a NVK5 and my new tuner uses PMT1. I don't like it, and neither does my transmission. I'm not sure if that's the exact issue but my Trans is defiantly not happy with it.

Have you asked Cody or anyone on the PHP forum?

I know there are "stock" calibrations to choose from, but I am unsure what your "stock" is. For instance you may have had a NVK PCM, but your stock calibration is a PMT, those do act differently.

1. The "stock" setting on a TS-Performance-based chip is a full binary program on the chip. The PCM is completely bypassed.

2. The strategy of the "stock" setting will be the same strategy as the rest of the calibrations on the chip. If it weren't, the truck would stall/stumble when changing to or from "stock".

Yep. That's a completely different animal (pun intended) but "stock" on that chip will still be the "stock" of the strategy used for the rest of the calibrations. The "bypass" mode allows operation on the PCM's internal calibration with the chip still installed....but it can't be accessed without a key off/on cycle due to the stall/stumble that would occur otherwise. Same as the built in no-start. It can be selected, but won't actually occur until after the key is turned to the off position.

So... if a programmer was to dial a truck (like for live-tuning), they'd start with the stock program first - then they'd have the foundation for the HP tunes?
