how to set timing

well i need to set my engine in time, its not the cams its the distributor part, sorry im so vague but i have hardly any idea what im talking about here, my grandpa is going to help me and he knows exactly what to do, just needs the exact numbers as to what it needs to be set to and he said somthing bout having to discconnect somthing to reset it?

Yeah, you have to disconnect the spout so the EEC doesn't mess with the timing while you are. What engine do you have? I know the 5.0 & 5.8 are supposed to be at 10* BTDC. You might need to advance it more, if you have slack in your chain.

got a 5.8, and only set it forward if it has slack? ive heard people say setting it to 12 or 13 makes it run better

Right. Normally a engine runs alittle better when the timing is advanced alittle over factory. And yes forward. If your chain has slack, you might have to go to 15*. If you go too far, it will spark knock when you drive it, just back the timing down till it stops.

Also you spout will be located at the distributor, or on the drivers side quarter panel near the fire wall.

Turning the distributor body in the direction of rotor rotation retards the timing. Turning it opposite of rotor rotation advances timing.
