Question 1995 302 swap to 351, transmission help

Ok guys I am a noob here and need some help..

I have a 1995 f150 4x4 with a 302 and 4r70w trans.

I have a 1995 351w sitting in the garage getting rebuilt.. My current transmission is acting up. I looking to buy another one one that has been recently built or need redone. As this truck is a daily driver.

Anyways I have found a guy locally that has a 1996 e40d out of a 4x4.. Now will this work in my truck when I do the 351w swap? I am unsure about the electrical connections, cross member, whether or not the transfer case will bot up, and how about the drive shaft length?

Is it worth the change or should I hold out for another 4r70w?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

E4OD is not compatable with the electronics in our truck, fix or replace the 4r70w. But before you rip it out what exactly was it doing? You have to understand that both of these transmissions are COMPLETELY computer controller and ANY sensor issue anywhere on the powertrain(engine, transmission, rear axle) will put the computer in limp mode which makes the trans do all sorts of unusual things.

Thanks for the fast reply.. It is just first gear when taking off from a stop more so on a incline and a very slight incline at that.. But it slips.. Sometimes is does it other times it doesn't.. So I was going to worry about it when I done the swap. If I put in in first and then shift into second it doesn't do it..

If its just first, it sounds like a electronic problem. If it was internal hard parts it would mess up in other gears too.

How does it shift?

If I remember right. 1st and 2nd use the same clutches, 3rd and 4th use the same clutches, and reverse uses the same as 1st and second. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Could be a shift solenoid, maybe. What does the fluid look like?

Also note the 351 needs a different flexplate than the 302(different engine balance), and you have to make 100% sure you get an AOD/4R70w flexplate and not a C6/E4OD flexplate, because the latter will destroy the transmission instantly the first time the engine is fired.

The transmission fluid was low the last time I checked but it looked good..

For the flexplate I will need one from a 1988 crown vic with a 351w/aod ?

Not a trans expert but it would seem to me that the one way clutch is bad on your trans.

If all else fails. The 4R70W is an abundant trans. Parts are cheap, and used trans is cheap. Hit up the junkyard, find one with nice bright red fluid. And yes, the crown vic flexplate should work, like Conanski said, 351 AOD/4R70W.

I will just keep an eye for another 4r70w.. I was thinking it was more than likely a clutch

My overdrive off light is flashing.. This has been for sometime now.. Everything works just fine.. I have done some reading, sounds like I should check the connections on the transmission?

You should check for codes, and connection. Your trans is telling you something is wrong!
