I've been getting the P0299 code off and on since I've gotten the truck 3 months ago.
Truck is an 05 with 64,000 miles so I'm assuming the turbo needs to be cleaned. The truck was never used for towing or put to any hard work so I assume rust has built up.
Money is kind of tight at this point but is there any major things I should do when I pull the turbo to clean it?
I've also seen the guide to cleaning the turbo in the tech folder, but is there an easy guide to pulling the turbo?
Soak the turbo mount bolts with PB Blaster before you pull them. No real easy trick to pulling it. Have you checked all your exhaust and CAC pipes for leaks??
Yes, exhaust is good and the CAC are worn and I will be replacing them, but they have not cracked or anything.
I just didn't find a guide to pulling the turbo...ie unbolting the alternator, etc. I wanted to ask everyone here who has pulled their own turbo.
Thanks.
I don't usually pull the alternator but it does make it easier to wiggle out. You do have to loosen and roll back the wiring harness that's over the turbo. Best I can tell you is that the turbo "screws" in and out with a twisting motion. Once you figure it out it doesn't take long. Cheezit has it down to about 15-30 minutes. Takes me an hour with hand tools but I'm slow.
Its not to bad Just the Bolts Gave me the hardest time they were cooked and seized in there Good mainly the Back Bolt really SUCKED for me. My turbo will never have that bolt installed again
Use anti seize on all of it going back together on bolts and Marmon Clamps/Valleys alittle slip-n-slide helps alot
I had seen a video, but the pulled the oil filter housing, dropped the alternator down and did a few other things, but if it can be done without having to do all that, I'd rather go that way.
The best tool for this is a long pry bar to get the base of the turbo off the oil drain tube, it is so heavy and is well seated to the up pipes that the pry bar will help alot

You don't have to pull either but pulling the alternator is relatively easy. The oil/fuel filter housings are a PIA to get off. I do it without pulling either. I equate it to one of those brain teaser puzzles where you're trying to get entwined metal rings apart. Once you know the "key" it twists right out.
