interested in maybe removing and cleaning my turbo this weekend how many hours to remove and install am I looking at, I am a corporate jet mechanic but inexperienced in automotive turbos. And still learning the diesel technology of my truck.
With no experience you should plan on a day, although it can be done easily in 4 hours or less. Pulling the turbo takes about 15 or 20 minutes. You'll need an 11mm deep socket for the turbo pipe clamps, a 10mm flex head gear wrench, an 8mm gear wrench and/or socket, a turbo replacement kit (gaskets, spacers, and bolts). Here is a good article on turbo reconditioning: http://www.forddoctorsdts.com/articl...icle-06-05.php
The trick is getting the turbo twisted around to get it out. Take the clips that hold the wiring harness loom across the back edge of the hood/firewall out and roll the plastic junk out of your way. There are 3 bolts in the turbo pedastal, two exhaust clamps, intake and CAC clamps, turbo oil supply line, and the harness for the VGT. The turbo oil drain just slips in and out.
ok thanks wife will be out of town starting thursday was thinking of starting thursday night as I can drive her car, and hopefully finish by sunday night, I was thinking of cleaning my turbo but only have 16000 mi on truck, should I wait or go ahead and clean it. I am getting a bit more turbo fart than normal (been doing it form day one). also milage is down a bit.
if you do remove the turbo one little thing too i found out the hard way is make sure you disconnect the battery cause you might ground the turbo out on the pos wire on the alt when your trying to manuver it out.
ok thanks all I think I might try the egr first probably dirty as I don't drive her enough. It is only 2 miles to work, i'd ride my bike if it was safe but the 2 streets I have to take are very busy and to dangerous for a bike in the mornings.
