Turbo question

I had an Oasis report run on a '05 I'm thinking about looking at. This is the last entry on the report "24355 TURBO VANES STICKING VERIFIED CUSTOMERS CONCERN HAS NO POWER. PERFORM KOEO AND CONT. HAS CODE P0299. PERFORM TSB 08 16 13 PERFORM TUBO FUNCTION TEST TURBO NOT BOOSTING AT ALL NO CHANGE IN TURBO PITCH. REOVE TURBO FOR INSPECTION FOUND EXCESSIVE RUST. UNISON RING RUSTED TO TURBO CENTER SECTION AND TURBO VANES RUSTED TO OUTTER TURBO HOUSING. REPLACE TURBO CLEAR CODES. PERFORM" . I'm wondering how the turbo could get rusty and is this a problem with 6.0's. I want to upgrade from my '02 F150, but I don't want to buy someone's trouble. Any advice will be appreciated.

That is exactly why the 6.0 needs to be driven. If you drive your truck daily and you don't let it sit for a long time, the rusting won't happen.

Its nothing to be scared of if thats the only thing on the Oasis reprt. Now if the report is lengthy and had several repairs I may worry. But a bad turbo not at all.

The turbo doesnt rust, it has a carbon buil-up inside of the VGT and causes the vanes to stick, usually in the open position, therefore full boost all the time. All they do is put a new CHRA (Center Housing Rotation Assembly) in and it works fine after that. Happens to almpst every 6.0 it seems like. definately not anything to worry about

The Ford TSB states that there could be "CORROSION, OR PITTING FROM THE CENTER HOUSING FLANGE OR HUB":

Also:
SCALY RUST, CORROSION OR PITTING MAY BE PRESENT INSIDE THE TURBINE HOUSING. THIS IS NORMAL. DO NOT TO REPLACE THE TURBINE HOUSING. VANE SET CLEANING WILL BE SUFFICIANT

Rusty turbine housing. Turbo replaced. Very little carbon/coking on this turbo. It had 12,000 miles. Killed by sitting for a few weeks. Unison ring was also stuck due to rust on the cast iron housing/cartridge at the inside diameter of the unison ring which was non-magnetic so probably stainless.

The housing on my turbo was badly rusted causing it to stick. It sat for over a year after it was wrecked before I bought it in Portland, OR where it rains a lot. I cleaned it all out as the TSB instructs and its been fine since.

You are right the turbo housing is magnetic and will rust but the unison ring is not and the vains show very little magnetic attraction. The new reconditioned turbos have part of the housing machined out so that there is less contact between the unison ring and the housing and partly resolving the sticking problem.
Lots of rust in this turbo.

Ive never seen the rust. But that may be cause by most of the trucks i work on run 24/7, since they are oil field trucks. not many sit around for long periods of time. Im glad i got on here, this is one more thing that will help make me a better tech.

The turbo is warr for 5yr 100k m. if its rusty internaly, the dealer can replace it with a later, updated model ( new machining procees creates a recess in the exh. hsg casting thus relieving the binding effect leting the Exciter plate move freely) by disassembling orig. turbo & confirming condition. But if its a later model turbo, they still can get sticky and can be service cleaned without any problems and work just as good as new. PT
