I bought a bronco with a 6 inch lift. The axel housing is cracked so I need a new one. The problem is that the axel housing is rotated to make up for the height. With a new axel do i have to re weld the axel mounts so it is at the same angel as the old one.
I also have a Bronco with a lift (4") and what they did with mine is they use small wedges that tilt the rear a few inches up. The wedges fit in between the spring perch and the springs if I remember right. Check and see if you have small wedges there and if not let me know, maybe I can help - I can at least send pics of my wedges-
If you choose to weld that axle housing I would also HIGHLY recommend trussing the axle too. The axle cracked for a reason, and the weld will be your weakest link now. So spend a little time and truss it up - with a 6" lift you have plenty of room.
Welds are strong, very strong, but when you weld you introduce heat, and unless you are a very good welder you may not get the weld in the entire depth of the crack.
As far as trussing goes, just use some square tube, flat stock, whatever you have and weld from each end of the axle up and over the pumpkin and put uprights every so often. I don't have any pics of my trusses on this computer, or I'd post one. If I think of it, I'll try to take one tonight.
Thanks mike. Another option is changing to a dana 60 but I cant afford it im sure. I would like to see your pictures. I have a brother inlaw who is a pro welder.
