Shock absorber angles

56 Ford F-100. Im doing some work that is going to change the pinion angle on rear axel so axel has been stripped of spring perches and shock tubes that had been welded to the axel by pervious owner. I want to use a mount on the bottom of the U-Bolts to mount the bottom of the shock. I removed the stock cross member above the rear axel and replaced it with a new one. My question is the angle of the shock from the bottom to top shock mounts. At what degree is the performance of a shock at its best?

Well, it has to do with getting it as closely in line with wheel travel as possible.

Hours of entertaining and sometimes informative discussion follow in these links. I think the short version is to try to replicate the original mounting angles.

I could go on but I think you get it. The last link might be the best.
