4R100 failures

1999 V-10 4R100 F53 Motorhome – On a downhill run, I downshifted to 2nd for braking assistance and the motor home acted as if the transmission was in neutral. When I pressed hard on the acellator, the transmission downshifted and provided the usual braking assistance. About three hundred miles prior to the downhill event, the transmission had massive slippage while starting off from a rest area. It finally lockup in OD and drove normally with several stops and starts, until the downhill event. Currently, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive provide no movement. 2nd and 1st will move forward with considerable slippage. Any ideas on my transmission problems?

4R100 failures

All these symptoms were caused by a center support bearing failure. The transmission shop indicated it was just a bearing failure, no excess heat or abuse was found during the rebuild. Total cost $2850 with a 12 month warranty.

They changed the center support bearing setup back when the transmission was the E4OD to eliminate those kinds of problems. Must have been something unusual.

The transmission rebuilder indicated early units contained a bushing and the assembly was upgraded to a bearing around 1996-1997. My transmission had the bearing assembly.
