i have been having tranny problems with it "kicking out of gear" and i want to change the fluid, i went to the auto parts store and they said their is 2 different filters a deep or shallow, how do i tell witch one i have? and how much of what kind trans fluid is the propper one? it is a 1995 c-6 trans.
I can't help you with the filter and you probably won't know until you drop the pan, but you'll need 12-14 quarts to refill assuming you also drain the torque converter... which has a drain plug.
Transmissions in a 4x4 usually have a deeper pan so, as yours is 4x4, go with the deep one.
You will need ATF meeting Dexron3/Mercron spec. and in quantity that Conanski says.
i got the fluid change done,it was the deep one. fluid and filter looked ok no abnormal odor or color, no notable sediment in the pan. but it still has that strange shift or hesitation. i think i have it narrowed down to a hesitation in 1st gear only that i can tell. any ideas on the solution to my problem, as i need to get the truck in a-1 shape so i can pull my camper on a 4 hour trip in the spring.
Don`t know if I can help but can you give a description of what is happening?
If you start from rest and accelerate on light throttle, how do the shifts feel?
If you start and accelerate on about half throttle how do the shifts feel?
I was having a similar problem. Turned out I didn't have enough pressure in the lines to provide firm feedback to the tranny. As such it never shifted well was hesitating and it was always hunting for the right gear. It had 110k on it so I had it rebuilt and added a shift programmer to it.
are you sure you have a C6 in that truck? is there an Overdrive button on the end of the shifter?
have you pulled codes. you should have an E4OD which is controled by the computer and a few sensors.
the C6 would be controlled by vacume so the modulator could be bad or a vacum line cracked and not providing proper vacume to the modulator. if in fact you have this tranny.
sadly,i believe they could still be ordered with the old fuel hog until '96.
(pretty much through the whole 9th generation trucks.)
they sure were great for their time.that time was over when fuel hit $1.50 per gallon imho though, long after production.they were known for being so dang tough is why.
yeah it shure does eat the gas, but i got a good deal on the truck and their is a price to pay for the heavy duty parts even tho it is $3.79 a gallon at 9 mpg. if i could get all the gremlins worked out i think i will have a beast of a truck.
