I've been looking into buying a remanufactured 300 for my 84. I've searched through the archives and seen varying opions on different vendors. However, I just thought I would ask to see if anybody had any good experience with anyone in particular? I've been looking a Promar, and CME (Carolina Machine Engines), just curious if anyone had any experience with either of those?
The place where i work will not deal with Jasper for their engines anymore. The QC sucks, and they have sold us a few engines over the years that have given us grief. Yeah, they paid for repairs/replacements, but a good QC company wouldn't/shouldn't have those issues.
Example: We got an engine for a Chrysler Pacifica from them, and it failed within 1500 miles due to poor workmanship to the cylinder head bolt/bolt holes. The car got towed back in with loss of compression and coolant. The 2nd engine was better, but you don't necessarily want to sign up to replace an engine in one of those. They do pay labor charges if a repair is necessary.
On the other hand, we have gotten a couple of rear axles and transmissions from them and have zero issues with them.
In Springfield PA there is a machine shop/repair facility called Mardinly's. They have a warehouse full of heads, engines, etc that are ready to sell. They also rebuild your current engine, whether you take it out or they do. I heard recently that they got a bad repuation for the repair facility, but I have never heard anything bad about them with the machine shop work. I think they have a 3 yr/unlimited mileage warranty for their stuff. Mardinly Enterprises - Broomall Pa
I just realized that the OP does not say where he is from. So this may or may not be relevant.
Just an idea... visit local automotive machine shops. I have at times been in shops which have various and sundry engine blocks just "sitting" due to various reasons [i.e. customer could not pay or built as spec. engines for projected future sales].
These might have "dust" on them and can be purchased for a good price!
I got my 300 rebuilt at Grooms in Nashville, two years ago. Thirty thousand miles later it hasn't missed a beat and they were great to deal with. Also, for a little extra, at the time it was under 200 bucks, I got a lifetime warranty to go with the engine. Oh, and they were half the price of Jasper.
.. I've been looking at Promar, and CME (Carolina Machine Engines), just curious if anyone had any experience with either of those?
I've had a Promar engine in my truck since March 2008.
Nothing has gone wrong with it, good compression, ect...
They were very prompt and professional.
One recent member purchased one and says he has a bad rear main seal.
But... he also has issues with the mechanic who installed it, so take what you will about his complaints.

Thanks for you response, and the link to the other thread. It's good to hear some first hand experience with Promar. I feel sorry to the guy in the other thread, but sounds like he had dud for a mechanic. It my case, I will be doing the work myself.
From the searching I have done so far, Promar is the most expensive, but I don't mind paying the extra money, if it I get a quality motor that will last for a while.
I thought I would add my experiences to this thread in case someone else it looking for info like I was doing previously. I ended up purchasing a long block from Promar. They offered an option of a stage 1 hp cam, and valve springs for the 300 , so I went ahead and took that option.
The engine was delivered in the time frame they said it would. I looked everything over and it looked good. My only complaints is that 1.) I needed one of my main bearing bolts to have a small stud on it to attach my oil pump sump, and the new block did not have that. 2.) The gasket kit they provided had cork gaskets for the valve cover, oil pan, and push rod covers, which I do not like. I did not use them, instead I purchased rubber gaskets. So these were realitivly minor complaints. Anyway, I put the motor together, dropped it in, adjusted my carb and timing, it sounds great, and no leaks, and has really good power. As of right now, I have only had it in for a couple of days, so I have not driven it much, but so far I am pleased with it.
