the PO of my truck had a 5th wheel camper that he towed with my truck. stock tranny and factory cooler and he said the truck pulled it like the it was not even back there.
What are the chances that the truck Scaper just got has been tuned within the last 1000 miles and is "working correctly"??
My truck was a relatively low mileage(80K) E4OD that worked perfectly fine empty. You could only tell it acted weak when it was loaded up with 16-18KGCVW.
You should inform everyone that you have a shift kit and cooler and gauge before telling them their trans will be fine, I didn't have those things and my trans wasn't fine. Just saying.

i can understand. i don't have to fiddle with my tps every week(or as often as you had to/mean), but there are time i talk to my tranny and ask it WTF are you doing? why are you up shifting now? i need a downshift!!
ahh i shouldn't joke around about such a misfortune.iv expressed my deepish empathy about your E40D in past brother and wish i knew about your symptoms earlier so i could have helped as iv stated many times when being serious.
iv made sure to dig up the proper tps settings and added them to my sig so others wouldn't have the same trouble.
as for why your tps voltages kept changing within 1k miles,i don't know.i know that's not a common occurrence.probably a bad wire between the tps and pcm,possibly the pcm plug was dirty,or the pcm was just bad.
'94 it sounds like yours is just starting to fail.try and catch it before it gets worse.

Don't remember off-hand. I got it from car-quest and it was the biggest they had in stock. I want to say they called it a 20 or 25,000 lb towing cooler. I have it plumbed to go from transmission to aftermarket cooler to radiator cooler to trans. If I went the other way it'd never get warm in winter! Driving empty or with light towing load I rarely ever see above 165* and plowing in winter I average about 150*. If you wish I can go measure it for size reference.
I've also heard of some people running old flushed out a/c condensers, but to me that seemed a bit redneck and overkill at the same time.
hey guys, wow that generated some response Just thought id put this out there, I bought my truck with 176000km on in it December. The truck was extremely well taken care of with trans serviced stickers all over the inside of the hood. I did ATF, filter and gasket (with all other fluids) right when I brought her home. So far I have had no probs with the truck at all other than a stuck brake calliper (that was a fun one...SMOKE) and I put her under load every day. It has a stock trans cooler up front. The truck now has 188000km on her. When should I service the trans again? Oh yeah and the fluid level has not changed, doesn't smell burnt and is bright red still.
Tow based on what sort of power you need and don't worry as much about being in overdrive or not. EGTs are more likely to be an issue if your RPMs are too low but even then, a truck that is left to stock specs will be hard to wreck. Its about gearing and keeping the engine RPM happy.
If you have 4.10 gears and are moving at 70 MPH, then you'll likely need 4th gear for all but the most extreme conditions.
If you have 3.55s and are hauling uphill at 50 MPH, then you need 3rd.
The overdrive section of the transmission is ALWAYS under load (even in reverse!). Its the first thing that power from the torque converter connects to inside the transmission, so locking out overdrive isn't going to spare that section of the geartrain.
Physically, the overdrive planetary is actually larger than the main forward planetary, so its not a structural issue. The only time overheating is likely to occur is when there is too much slip happening.
Slip can happen from a failing clutch pack, or a torque converter that isn't locking when it should (which may or may not be a failed lockup clutch).
Sometimes E4ODs do fail at 100k miles, but those are generally neglected and of the earlier vintage (1989~1990 and still at factory spec for those years). The other issue is people tend to try boosting the power of these trucks without re-adjusting the transmission to cope with the higher torque. Or worse, they plug in an electronic line pressure riser, which ends up doing more harm than good.
3000lbs-6000 lbs is well within what these trucks were built for. Just drive it and let that truck do what it does best - earn it's keep
IDIDieselJohn - that sounds about right for the size of my trans cooler. I just soft mounted it out front with some adel clamps (I don't like those cheesy through-the-radiator style zip ties).
My a/c didn't work but I wanted it to work when I was done It's nice to have and cheap to fix.
