AE data questions

I already have a thread going for AutoEnginuity software/hardware here [LINK] - but now I want to dive into the readings I'm getting on my truck. This is where we all learn our trucks together from the eyes of a newb (me).

TEMPS! 40-degree F morning drive to work (45 miles) down the side of a hill, slight incline up a river canyon, and to the top of a steep hill. I recorded Engine Oil Temp (EOT), Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT), and Transmission Oil Temperature (TOT).

My ECT makes no sense to me, I can only assume the software is looking at the wrong sensor, the PCM is lying, or my tuner is tricking an input. 304 derees on the ECT, while my engine temp gauge in the dash slowly climbs to normal. Can somebody please help me out here?

ECT does not work for the automatic trucks. The manual trucks seem to have better results. It has to do with the way the PCM gets the signal from the sensor and from what I have found out they have different sensors.

I am guessing that AE doesn't decipher it well with the various sensors. Same thing for my Aeroforce Scan Gauge. Sometimes it will be close, but it is always higher than the actual reading I have from my extra coolant temp gauge.

Thanks woodnthings, that's an important piece of information for AE users out there.

I will "extract" that sensor from the list of things I monitor and use that empty slot for something else that's critical.

Whew!

Aaahhh.... Finally! I now have enough time to pour through some of this data.

This graph represents 3 minutes and miles of driving flat-uphill-flat while passing a couple of cars/trucks. I see a very happy HPOP here, 2500 PSI on a sustained acceleration up a hill in OD and over 3000 PSI in Stomp mode. I couldn't be more pleased.

Exhaust Back Pressure - well, we can all learn something from this.
  • The OD accel up the hill (closing the distance) is treating me very well here with reasonable backpressure - assuming my EBP sensor is OK.
  • Stomp mode shows a whole different picture, but only in passing gear. The only time I have ever reached "marginal" EGTs, is passing hard up a steep hill in passing gear. My backpressure shows why this happens.
Good EGTs in OD uphill and bad EGTs in Passing gear uphill now look to be a symptom of excessive back pressure. With the data I'm reading and my experiences in the truck, I have more faith that the EBP sensor is telling me the general truth - even if the accuracy is in question.

Why is my EBP sensor in question? Because it says 16 PSI before I start the engine. Atmospherice pressure is about 14 PSI, so it might be programmed to use the Barometric Pressure Volts as a reference - but I don't know that. Why don't I know that? I haven't yet purchased the book that Woodnthings suggests for accompanying the AE. So I have all this power to pull all these numbers out of the vehicle - but no way to interpret the data without my rudimentary understanding of the vehicle and constant visits to The Brotherhood.

Woodnthings - What was that book again? My debit card is at the ready.

The book is 7.3l powertrain and emissions manual. Look on eBay they usually have them on there for the best price.

Your EBP reading may be correct, 14 psi is at sea level. What is it at where you live? You can do a quick check, just read MAP and EBP at the same time, see if they read the same or not (engine off of course). I see 14.7 here on the wet side at sea level, I suspect you will see more over there.

I'm about 600 feet up, so the reading should be slightly lower than that - MAP reads 13.9 and that sounds about right. KOEO shows the EBP at 16.7. That's pretty close, but I don't think it would be a waste of time to pull it and check it.

In my search, I found this [LINK] and this [LINK].

I'm not a big eBay fan, so I just ordered it on Amazon. I got the 2000 7.3L Diesel PC/ED manual and the complete 2000 Superduty/Excursion wiring diagram book for $120 with shipping. I know I can find just about every diagram I need here on the forum, but I want it with me 60 miles from the nearest internet connection on the open road.

Thanks for all your help! Pretty soon I'll be qualified to add washer fluid.
