Parking Brake Problems

Hi all, I have a 1997 f150 4x4 ext. cab 4.6L and I am having a few parking brake problems.

I bought th
e truck back in October and I was told that the truck was taken to a shop because the parking brake was no longer holding the vehicle weight fully. The mechanic said it was either the cables or the ratchet that needed to be replaced and he did the cables. this did not solve the problem so I am assuming it is the ratchet.

Fast forward to a w
eek ago, I was driving on a logging road to my campsite, and when I got there I went to apply the little parking brake that would work, and the cable came off the ratchet ***embly.

Today I pull
ed the ratchet off and I am not sure how to attach the cable to a new parking brake ratchet ***embly. The end of the cable is flared, and I'm not sure how it will secure to the new ***embly. Anyone have any pictures or tips?

Thanks

I'll be watching this post because my e-brake doesn't work either. I will have to replace whatever is broke myself and I know little to nothing about this stuff. I crawled under a strangers F-150 at DQ to see how a e-brake should be hooked up, he just looked at me like I was crazy (I did ask permission). I'll try to post some pictures of my messed up setup and see if I can help at all.

You are correct. The piece in the second picture should be part of the cable wire. you have to buy a new cable wire. I have a factory manual and I will look up the procedure for you. It is a simple hookup just like the old school motorcycle brake cable wire. routing would be tricky because I believe one reason for premature failure is that it was not install/routed correctly.

Oh another thing when buy a new cable, make sure to check with dealer on the part. i read on one of these forums that there are several different lengths of wires out there.

hope this helps
