This is an AOD from a '91 Grand Marquis. Salvage yard unit. $125 IIRC
Was supposed to be a working tranny....ran when parked...

This is the infamous AOD servo question. "C" being the weakest....... "B" being better......"A" being the best factory servo. There are aftermarket "A+ and better servo's out there for the high horse power motors. This servo is the overdrive band servo. It apply's the pressure. If it doesn't apply enough pressure, it will slip and burn the OD band.
The "B" servo should be fine for what I am working with.

Jeff, if you had pulled the pan before buying that trans you would have seen that it was marked as junk.

Oh it's not junk! It's a diamond in the rough!

I wouldn't have expected much from a salvage yard tranny. The good news is, nothing inside is damaged. Only that retaining ring, and that was a common problem( so I am understanding), there is an upgrade for that piece.

edit: LMAO I posted without noticing the pic! Good eye!

Hey Jeff, got any metal stamps? I could put..."not" in front of it!

Ok...a classic example of "It ran when parked"
Just because the vehicle moved, doesn't mean it was ready to bolt up and drive...
I am really glad I decided to tear it apart, before trying it out!

Yes, I love the phrase "ran when parked". They never elaborate, like "ran like crap when parked" or "barely ran when parked" or better yet, "I couldn't believe it still ran when parked".

Have you worked on transmissions before or are you using a book? I have no experience with autos.

I am no transmission expert, but have successfully rebuilt a C6.
I always have a book, ATSG
I know a guy or two that are transmission rebuilders. They won't cut me any deals, but are always willing to answer questions for me.
I got this apart completely in an hour. I know enough to be dangerous at this point. I am fascinated with the learning. Really, it is nothing more than just another part. being familiar with what goes where and such.
AIN'T NO HILL FOR A CLIMBER !!

Hey Jeff,
I'm expecting you take good notes! If mine keeps hiccuping I may take my AOD apart this winter. That's a pretty daunting pic - yikes - look at all that ....

Hi Jeff - This old guy (older than my truck!) is new to all of this so please bear with me- your write up is more than great. It has helped me see where I would have made BIG mistakes. I have a 49 F3 bought it 14 years ago out of the last barn in Chicago 2 days before the farm became a housing project on the far south side. It sat for a number of years but got the bug again 2 years ago and now have a 5.0 with a 5 speed in it, an F250 read end. I got a 86 XJS front end for it and jsut about ready to put it in- the question is the steering pump. I have the jag pump with a small v-belt pulley. I have the pump form the 5.0 with the serpentine pulley. How can I tell if I have the 93 E-150 mount you talk about and can I take the pulley from the 5.0 and swithch it with the Jag or do I get a Saninaw with a serp pulley? Remember I'm an old guy so I get lost easily and miss things - I looked at every pic you have but never saw the steering pump to compare it to mine. I hope I am not messing up by asking this at this point. If so tell me to go take I hike and I will understand. Dave S

First off, Welcome to the forum! I am honored that your first post is right here on my build thread! I have some pics of the van bracket/saginaw pump and the truck bracket/ford pump. I will post them here shortly.
The JAG pump, I don't have and never have had my hands on one.
So I am not sure what it's pulley is like. So let me post the pics I have and we will go from there.

Here is the typical pickup truck style '87-'96
F series 302 and 351W is the same. This is on the 351W I was going to use.

This is the van bracket and saginaw pump. The brackets are only different in the pump mounting area, beyond that it is a direct swap. And of course you will need something different for hoses or adapting hoses.

By the way, what did you do with the old rear and springs?

Hi Dave, sorry I missed this...I don't recall ever getting notification.

Anyway, The rear springs fell apart like CHICKLETS when I separated them.
There were a couple visible cracks and so I took them apart and they were broken in a million pieces. I sold the carrier, ring and pinion, and axle shafts.
I still have the housing, both halves, and some other stuff related.
i still have the front axle minus the F3 hubs/drums. I you are looking for anything, ask. Never know I may still have it.
Front drums...sold.
Still have the front springs.
Still have all of the spring mounts too.

if you are using the front bracket system from an '87-'96 truck, the easiest is too use the van bracket and saginaw serpentine pulley just like in the pic. I believe mine came from '91 E-150 with a 5.0
i was told they were hard to find, but I went to several yards nearby and found three on the first day of looking.
