I'm in the middle of my restoration and just got to the gearbox. Against others' recommendations, I have decided to rebuilt/reseal it. I took the valve body and piston out as one assembly, therefore the ball bearings didn't come out and I'm in good shape. The problem is the needle bearings for the worm shaft. They looked good, but fell apart on me. No one lists these bearings, so I'm wondering if I already have an upgraded/Redhead steering box? These needle bearings are probably two inches long on each end.
I have a '77 F-250 4x4 and I think I read somewhere that these gearboxes didn't have needle bearings? I need to try and figure out what I have and how to get the bearings. Help!
It sounds like you do have a Red Head, if not, someone else has done the upgrade. These boxes did not come with needle bearings on the pitman shaft.
As far as replacing the bearings, any good bearing supply house (Motion Industries, etc.) should be able to match up what you have. If not, you might try contacting Red Head and see if they can help.
