Ok so me and my dad took out my bearing to get some new ones and change out the grease, and the spindals (well we think thats what they are called, after you take off the thing that holds the wheel on and all the bearings and stuff, its a longer steel thing in the middle that the bearings run on and it has two flat spots and a slope. i hope that describes what i am talking about.) are sort of ruffed up on the slants. Why is this? We thought the bearings were on the flat spots? So why is this, is it serious? Thanks guys. Sorry if i get the name wrong i have never done any of this and pop's hasnt for 35 or so years.
I'm guessing your talking about the front wheels. There are two bearings that ride on two races (angled pieces). There will be a washer on the outside that holds everything in place. A nut is on the very outside with a pin to keep it from coming loose. Is this what your describing? The center shaft on the spindle sits inside the bearings. So you have center shaft (spindle), bearing, race. The shaft could be scarred from improper mounting/wear and tear over 40+ years of use. If the bearing ever locked up I guess it would start tearing up the race and spindle shaft. If its not in too bad of shape some emery cloth should clean it back up.
yep the center shaft, sorry i forgot to mention its on the front axel of a 2wd. its not tribally torn up, but 1/16th inch grooves in some places. alright, yah the grease was pitch black and it used to be a creamy color lol. the bearings have defintly seen better days alright thanks
alright cool, im going to town to get the new bearings and races in the morning. that 25k interval is good to know too thanks.
Do not be surprised if your local autoparts store does not have the bearings/races and new seals (you should not use the old ones over again) in stock.
What year, series is your truck? I can give you the bearings & races "Industry numbers" what parts stores use.
Bill, I believe in his first post he said they got new bearings. Will he be ok with the spindles in their current condition?
I have yet to get them, but it is a 66 f250 twin i beam 2wd with a 352 np435 combo. The okness of the spindles is the main question at this point because i know for a fact i need new bearings its just a matter of finding them. Thanks again guys

John
The OP says in post #1 that he took the old bearings/races out to get new ones...but hasn't gotten them yet, because...
In post #5, he says he's going to get new bearings/races tomorrow (Monday).
Has it been determined yet by the OP what caused the spindles to become scored? Worn out grease, or did the races spin in the hubs?
If the races spun...the hubs may have to be replaced.
---------------------------------------------------- Raider 50: There are two different sizes of bearings, races and seals used in 1966, as it depends on what size the front brake shoes are.
Are the front shoes 12 1/8" x 2" or 12" x 2 1/2" ?
Is it on either end of the spindle where the bearing sits or on the sloped area between the bearings? His original post says "roughed up on the slants". All that matters is where the inner diameter of the bearing sits.
If it is on the slope between the bearing seats on the spindle, don't worry about the scores. I have seen those really rough. It is simply a tapered transition between the inner and outer bearing diameters.
ok, i got all but the large bearings today(they come in 2maor morning). I am going to put the smaller bearing on the spindal to see if it still fits or if i am going to need to get me some new spindals.
Sorry about not telling the exact location of the damage, i was under the impression that the race and bearings sat on the level part of the spindal not the sloped part. But apperently i am wrong lol.
Update....it seams as tho i didnt push reply. so you get all of it at once then, the bearing fits like a glove. The damage is mostly imbettween where the 2 bearings sit on the slope. Thanks for all your help guys it looks like im about done with this problem.
