Look on the driver side door jamb- there should be a plate stamped with different information about your truck. The original transmission type should be listed.

if your truck has the 5.0 it could be the 4r70w,if it is the 5.8 most likely the e4od. Trans code will be U for the 4r70w,not sure about the e4od.

If the 97 has the E4OD (which I believe it is more likely), I would stay away from it. It will work, but the E4OD's are garbage! Electronically modulated transmission that have a high failure rate.. That 4r70w is a very good transmission.. If you can get it overhauled, you will save yourself a ton of money in the long run!

is the tranny in your f150 a modular motor? If it is,the bellhousing pattern will be different, even if the electronics could be made to work.

Im not sure if the transmission is bad yet I just replaced the front clip on my truck while I was doing that it sat for about a month and now its not shifting right and there is plenty of fluid in it so I was looking on ocala4sale and found a 4r70w for $250 the guy said its out of a 97

Fuel Injection Technical Library » How To Run a Self-Test Here is a link on how to check for trouble codes. Maybe do that first.
`97 will not fit.

The E4OD is a good transmission IF it has the upgrades done to it that started in 1993 or 1994. If it's been rebuilt since then it should be a solid and reliable transmission. All you have to do is keep the fluid clean and take care of any electronic issues (sensors, etc.) that crop up while using it.

All of which is moot, of course, because a 1997 F-150 never came with an E4OD. They are all 4R70W. Also, a 1997 F-150 has a modular bolt pattern which is completely different from the 300/302/351w pattern that your 95 has.

So whoever said that the trans will work fine is mistaken.
