I'm hearing more and more about these O.D. units failing. Wondering how you guys with the stick shifts are doing with failures. Maybe Ford should go back to the C6. Seems like they held up better.
I bought my 95 Bronco w/OD new. I mostly tow and offroad in sand and mud with it. Not much else. Little hiway miles. I have had no problems with my OD. (Knock on wood) I do change filter & fluid every 20K.
As of right now the truck is minus tranny and transfer case. Sat i got started about noon while i was waiting for my friend to come over to finish the removal. I took off everything i knew i could remove. Both driveshafts, starter, inspection cover, drained tranny and converter, and prepared the tools. It only took about 2 hours to get it the rest of the way out. Man i cant beleave how heavy that E4OD is!!!. Two of us could bearly lift it. We droped it off at the house of the guy thats rebuilding it. He said possibly the end of the week it will be done. While its out im gona drain the transfercase and change the u joints in the front drive shaft. Also i have to clean up my oil pan. Its so rusty i think it may be leaking. Might have to tiger hair it. Hey i worked on some valve cover why not giv it a try. At least if it is rusted out Now would be the best time to lift the motor and change it.
One qwick question. The rear seal on the transrecase, the one thats between the case and tailhousing about 6" in from the rear driveshaft is leaking how hard is it to change?
the whole problem is ford aod and e transmissions are junk they are designed to pull the weight of a car not a truck and they dont last in a car either i dont care if someone has one on a big block they are not for pulling weight or made to be in trucks i have replaced many aod transmissions and just did the one in my van e150 has never pulled a trailer is a conversion van 5.0 efi the transmissions have to many flaws that ford puts in all of their autos and trucks i have a few people that work at a ford dealer here in michigan that is the most common problem and what they are repairing the most besides drivablity and normal maintinance trust me the cars here get the hell beat out of them in the traffic the overdrive tranies shift way to fast and way to much as i`am sure all you on the board have noticed and are shifting in and out of overdrive way to much you cant expect any trans to last that shifts as many times as an overdrive trans does every time it shifts you dont feel it but the clutches slip untill they fully inguage and every time it slips the more wear your clutches get till they have nothing left and that is what is in the bottom of your trans pan also if you notice from 1st to 2nd it shifts at very low mph and you have really be on the gas to make it pick up speed in 2nd witch is hard on the torque converter and the same in 3rd if you have ever ridden a motorcycle or driven a manual trans auto if you are in to high of a gear for a cirtian rpm range the motor has problems making power kinda like trying to take off in 2nd or third gear (if you have a bigblock this does`nt apply lol) and if you down shift to 1 gear lower the car seems to pick up speed and have a good power curve that is the same with an auto trans the other problem is rear end gear ford has this thing with putting junk gear ratios in the rear ends in od at 6o mph the engine only turns 1000 rpm and has no power at all so here we are again stepping on the gas and making it shift from 4th to 3rd till you get to the rite speed and right back into 4th again (till the next hill or long turn) thats why they dont last i never drive my van in od unless i`am doing 65mph and above i also manually up shift always but never downshift manually because your trans wont last (also endup with shavings in the pan) the only reason i just put a trans in my van because the planetary gear just broke and it has 150000 miles on it i also change the fluid every 20000 and have a massive cooler on it plus the radiator also use synthetic fluid ikt holds up better and will also make the trans last longer i also use mobil1 oil in the engine of the van in the other trucks i use 20/50 valviline i get good oil pressure and it does`nt turn to water in 1000 miles like 10 40 people are like thats to thick no it is not as soon as you drive it 2 days in heavy traffic and the heat gets to it it starts to break down like all oil does just stays thicker longer and keeps more pressure between bearings witch stops friction and makes the engine last longer same with trans fluid but a trannie gets hotter and has no air to cool it off like the engine that is right behind the grill stealing all the air (this should make some people think) the more oil pressure the better to an extent if the volume and pressure are to high the pump keeps all the oil in the top of the motor and in high proformance apps thats not good at high rpm`s so changing the spring in your mellings pump to high pressured is a mistake but you do want high volume
I have a 93 F150 with a 4.9 and A4od and4/4 and it does the same thing.I heard its the torque converter that causes the shuddering and I personally think that you should replace the torque converter whenever you have the trans rebuilt.Just think you removed all that crap and the torqe converter is right there plus if theres metal in the pan there could be metal in the converter I bought the 93 whit 130000 miles and a blown motor and I wish I knew aboutbthe converter before I put it back together After the motor I did a trans service and I used 1 qt LUCAS Trans medic [I think]I know it was LUCAS though. It worked well, not completely but it helped alot.20000 miles later its due again, I rather do a trans service than a trans replacement any day Just my$.02c
