E40D problem

Just since it satarted to get colder here. My truck has
>started doing some wird stuff. When driving the truck in
>OD, I'll start to lugg it at around 1,000-1,400 rmp the
>truck will start to stutter bad, takeing my foot off the gas
>lets it downshift and problem goes away,if i give it a
>little gas it stops shuttering, if i give it a lot it
>shutters worse. Around 75-80 mph accelerating does it to. I
>can cruise in drive, its fine unless i realy push it. From
>a dead start i can hammer it through 1,2,3, into overdrive,
>it pulls hard until the 3-od shift then it starts
>shuttering. My friends tell me its the motor missing but
>evertime it shutters the rpms go up, I can watch then on the
>tac, so im positive that its not the motor. I dumped 2
>bottles of lucas trany fluid stabilizer in it last night.
>want to see if it helps. Whats the going rate for a trany
>rebuild? Im going to have it looked at this week so i want
>some other numbers to throw around. If its to expensive im
>gona try and put a 5 speed in it. One other thing it does
>slightly miss at idle in gear but not in park or neutral.
>Nothing big just a slight shake.
>
>You think after three trucks id learn my lesson with the
> automatcs. slushbox sticks

I had my mom take the truck to a tranny shop yesterday and guese what niether them or my mom noticed any problems, no codes were present, but as soon as i drove it that night it started doing it a gain. Am i crazy . It was warm all day then got cold that night, could that have something to do with it

please this is driving me crazy.

Now the next item. Is it compleatly posible to convert my truck to a 5speed and everything will work good. I have a Ford parts guy that junks truck for a living finding me all the parts i need. Two guys at the tranny shop told me that it was not possible because of all the integrated components. Iknow the parts i need and that i have to change the computer to a five speed comp. this dosen't seam difficult, but they made it sound like it was. Were they just trying to persuade me to have the do the tranny or were they telling me the truth. My parts guy has yet to lead me astray an said it could be done.

E40D problem

The problem with your E4OD is the converter clutch is chattering. The reason it stops doing that when you accelerate or slow down, is that the converter only locks up on cruise.
If it remained locked up when you needed to accelerate more than just a little, it would reduce power. And the reason it unlocks when you decelerate or downshift, is that the strategy is designed to make the converter unlock in case you had to stop right away, and if the converter was still locked, it would kill the engine.
So it unlocks on throttle tip-in (giving it more throttle), tip-out (backing off of the throttle suddenly) and it also will unlock with the brake light activated.
You can be sure it's the converter if it feels like you're running over those stutter bumps in the lanes on the freeway.
The permanent solution with an E4OD is replace the converter and the scarf cut seal on the stator support. If this was 4R70W, a fluid change would do it.
Good luck

E40D problem

Thanks Joe . You are the first person to actually give me a reason and fix for my problem, not just the tranny is shot. If i change the converter and that seal will my trany still be ok or is so time for the scrap pile? What about my plan to put the 5 speed in? Will it work. If you can write me back timsheriff(No Email Addresses In Posts!) I have to make a decision by sat what i am goin to do.

E40D problem

I'm also am having E4OD problems. Shop in Amarillo, TX says about $1600 for rebuild w/updates. Their are at least 3 of us that are interested in the auto to manual swap. We all know about the normal
parts, but aren't sure about the computer end. Hope this helps

Post E40D problem

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Nov-02 AT 04:34 PM (EST)]Dear Joe Young or any other helpful expert,
I recently purchased a 95 F150 4x4 with a E4OD tranny. I am experiencing a shutter at cruise speed and mild acceleration. The truck has 60,xxx original miles. Where would you start in trouble shooting the root cause. The shutter is mild, but I notice it. Do you have any recommendations for replacement parts, so I don't have to deal with this again in the near future.

What are typical prices for a new or reman converter and scarf seal?

Where is the scarf seal located?

Will replacement of damaged parts require any special tools that may require taking truck to repair shop instead of performing work on my own?

Will I do more damage to the tranny than just the converter if I choose to ignore?

Thank you for any assistance you maybe able to provide.

Randy

havack wrote up the M5OD swap I helped him with on his '93 Bronco. It's on his site:
http://www.broncodata.com/
He recorded all the P/Ns, prices, & procedures, & took plenty of pics.

E40D problem

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Nov-02 AT 05:15 PM (EST)]I have this exact problem and the transmission shop told me they willl put some kind of update into the hyrdraulic circuit that runs the converter. Is that just the scarf seal you are talking about, or is there more to it? Is it possible for me to put this update or fix in myself? I can replace the converter myself, and would rather fix the root of the problem myself instead of paying someone to do it. :-X23
Thanks for the help,
Travis
