So I am driving today and I take off at a stop Light and I hear something start knocking quickly against what sounded like Sheet metal. At first I thought I threw a Rod or something. So I got home and Inspected it and I thought it was coming from the oil pan but after inspecting it more it was coming from the Fly wheel cover/Sheild. It only had one Bolt left on it and was pretty much just Hanging there Dangling. I found some bolts that fit from my other truck and bolted it back up but it just makes the noise louder. It seems the Fly wheel is hitting the cover. Is it possible that the Cover is bent? Maybe it bent from hanging for I dont know how long or the Fly wheel is Warped? It drives good and runs good, Just a loud knock on the sheild, Very annoying. Only thing I can see that I can do is take the cover off?? Never had this issue before but I gotta use it for work tomorrow. Any Suggestions? Anyone had this problem?
i have slits cut in my 93 zf cover...im guessing the PO either had that problem and pound the middle down and it went away for him, or he had a bad leak? cuz mine doesnt knock grind or vibrate so i cant think of any other reasons its bent down in the sides and middle?
might want to try taking it off and seeing if it goes away and look for any thing thats rubbing on eachother

I am just wondering if maybe since it was hanging, and the only thing holding it up was the exhust that pipe that crosses right there. Thought since the engine does move a little when shifting and throttling it maybe have bent it a little. Thought putting the bolts back on would fix it but just seemed to make it more constant..lol... I guess I am gonna see if I can get it off, seemed like a tight fit to get it off if I can.
Just took the Cover off, On the back side it was Def. hitting it, No more noise yet. Gotta drive it to make sure. I did find a peice of metal in there that I dont know what it goes to. Assuming it goes to peice of the clutch... Will have an update in a little while.
Ok, After gettin the cover off and driving no more noise. The metal part I found inside sitting on the cover was a piece of one of the springs on the front stide of the flywheel. I found the broke spring on the fly wheel and it was the only piece broken off. Pics Below. All springs on the flywheel seem to be loose, Is that normal?? And is it ok to leave the Cover off the fly wheel?? Runs like a Champ again, Question is for how long?
that small piece, is part of a clutch spring you need a to repair asap
What does that consist of? It seems like it has been like that for sometime now, That peice of spring was really oily and dirty so I know it has been broke for a little while. I just cleaned it up for picture.
Looks like a disc hub spring, that discs life is close to an end ... It's going to start tearing itself apart, something you would rather not have happen.
Springs on the flywheel? As in dual mass flywheel?
I have been running mine for over a month now without the cover, with no ill effects. It's intended to keep debris and hands away from the spinning flywheel.
You might be correct, now that I look at it it looks smaller in diameter and wire size then I originally thought, that would indicate DMF spring ... In that case the results are not typically as devastating. Once all the springs fall apart it just gets noisy, unlike a disc that'll shred itself and park ya right there!

Yeah I guess it would be a Dual Mass Fly wheel. The springs are on the Front side of the Flywheel. Which is better news then it being a Clutch spring or anything else. I drove all day today with the cover off and it was fine, I only drive on the road so I dont encounter to many debries, Only the stuff people throw out there windows

fh : )_~
The spring is only about 1 inch wide.... I can deal with the springs coming off on the DMF. I dont mind a little noise. The truck is used for work and is not that pretty...lol... My 97 powerstroke has a DMF and the thing Rattles when taking off in 1st or 2nd gear. Not gonna Change to a SMF until it needs cluth. But I drove the IDI today with the cover off and she drove normal. I guess I wont worry about it till I have to as long as she keeps on rolling..lol
