I have a 2002 F350 SD dually 4x4 with the Dana 80 open carrier with 3:73 gears. I'm wanting to add some type of locker in it but i'm not real sure what route to go. I can't afford the ARB locker that I want so it is kind of up between the Richmond Power-Trax and the Eaton Detroit True Track lockers. I have done some research on the Richmond unit but I'm
not sure it is right for my needs ( as I haul a 20,000 lb horse trailer). So my question is what locker should I use or maybe some type that I haven't thought of?
Sounds like you need an arb or an electric locker. Usually the mechanical lockers recommend against towing with them, although I have towed small 2k trailers without any ill effects. Maybe a good limited slip?
I've used the Auburn ECTED electric locker, liked it a lot. When not locked it has a clutch pack that works like a limited slip. When voltage is applied, it pulls in a cone gear and locks. Easy to install and wire too.
The new trucks have e lockers in them and this is my first expirence with this type of unit but it is flawless. I haul every day and it is nice to only turn it on when you need it and forget about it when you dont. Tires will last longer too. E locker is the way to go!
Ok ya'll have my attention. I was just looking into the auburn ECTED unit but can't find one that fits the spicer Dana 80 diff. Is there anyother electric unit that is made for the 80?
I don't mean to hijack this thread but i have a 2011 with factory e-locker. What is the point of it? I have tried using it for traction to avoid getting out to lock the hubs and found it useless unless i just want to spin 2 tires lol. I know lockers are used for towing, but what would be the reason or application and time i want to use it. I have the 6.2L gas and have 2,000lbs of weight in a service body and tow around 5,000lbs and at the most 9,000lbs if i haul two rigs on a trailer which i haven't done yet.
Here is the link to Eaton's 2011 Application Guide. See Page 4 for Ford trucks. Eaton still does not offer the ELocker for the Ford rear axles. I have inquired for the past three years and their response has been "It is under development." I think what they really mean is that they developed it for Ford for the 2011 Super Duties and will not offer it to the public... much like how Warn Industries does not offer their lockers for the 2005+ Super Duties.
I would strongly advise against an automatic locker in a dually used for towing. 99% of the time when towing, you want the diff open. And the automatic lockers pretty much lock up whenever you're on the throttle.
Making a turn with locked rear end with a heavily loaded dually on dry pavement is REALLY hard on things.
Doesn't Eaton offer a Truetrac for the Dana 80? Not a locker, but a really good limited slip may be all you need?
