hi guys i just put in a freshly rebuilt hypermax turbo, pre-pulse, on my 89 7.3 with C6 trans. Its non wastgated and my fuel is 2 flats away from maxed out. i'm wondering if there are any other guys that are running this pre pulse turbo, it'll make 10 psi at any time, and 14-15 when held wide open, but it definetly doesn't whistle like a powerstroke. Is this much boost a little unsafe wit out head studs too? is this a normal range? oh and another thing where can i get a down pipe clamp? I have a clamp on there now from the local cat dealer here in st cloud that's from one of their backhoes or something but it leaks when held wide open, not terrible but enough to annoy me. Thanks!
As long as boost levels stay below 12 PSI on a 7.3 you should have no problems with stock head bolts.
7 or 8 PSI will make it like a new truck as far as performance goes.
If you are looking to push it harder, I do recommend head studs which should keep you safe up to 20 PSI boost with stock pistons.
And I am currently running 14lbs on a 385k mile motor and still digging for more, when I swapped the motor into my truck, the IP, Injectors and Turbo were either replaced or rebuilt, Re-Over-Torqued the heads and manifolds during the swap and ceramic'ed the piping. She's still screaming for more air.
I'm not sure if any one has done this but i was at fleet farm and i used 2" flex pipe, which ran from the turbo y-pipe then connected to the solid pipe that connected to the inlet side of the turbine, which had about 8in on it. Basically there is flex pipe 2ft long that runs up the drivers side of trans, welded to the turbo side and clamped on the y-pipe side. which is also solid pipe. The down pipe was cut, as it didn't really work, about to 15in in length, then 2.5" flex pipe for about 2 feet, then it goes to dual 5" stacks. i thot the flex pipe would leak, but the turbo spools almost instantly, hitting 10 lbs within a second, and egts barely get above 1150. Works good!
Sweet! But 10 psi with EGTs at 1150 seems little high..?..I have no experience with the hypermax unit or how efficient it is but you might want to try and open up the intake a bit, with my set up when I was on a dyno I had to back off the throttle in fear of hitting 20psi with no studs...I was around 18-19psi that run and my EGTs were at 1100....and that was WOT. Where are you getting your boost and egt reading from?

what are you pulling that requires so much power though? do i recall correctly, that you bought your newer 9th gen for a 5ver or?
i think 8-10 psi will be more than enough for me.then again with my granny driving, just N/A is 95% of the time overkill,so i guess that don't mean much lol.
The egt probe is about 1.5" away from the #8 cylinder, and the boost gauge is the old mechanical one originally from hypermax (says hypermax on it and came with the turbo when i bought it) and its tapped into the intake housing that the compressor side feeds. The egt gauge is one from glowshift gauges and its been in for over a year and seems to work good, but should i be worried about my turbo sucking it up? by the way idk what other people think about egts but i've had mine well past 1400, no lie, and held at 1200 for many miles and never has skipped a beat. The timing is adanced 13*
MUJA1001, your engine is headed for a melt down.
i have never seen ignition timing so misunderstood, than i do with the IDI diesel engine.it amazes me.
as you increase fuel, the more you want to retard the timing, not advance it for peak performance.
i think people are confusing the word "advance" with "advanced power".
that explains your high EGTS too.

Yup, Goose Cargo/Car Haulers typically.
Though yesterday with my equipment tag trailer hauled a load of scrap, weighed in at 19820, out at 9400 with 1302.50 in my pocket. Didn't want to do it yet but the town gave my until Friday to have the scrap out of my residential side yard...
