some gauge cluster questions
i pulled a cluster out of a truck that was going to the crusher (rust everywhere) and i noticed that it has some differences than the cluster in my 78. this one goes to 100mph has some chrome accents and its all black. sorry if this is a dumb thread im just curious what things changed between trim packages, years, etc..
it looks real nice, im thinkin of putting it in my 78. how do i correct the speedometer so it reads correctly?
how do i hook up the speedometer cable? when i took it out i broke the white plastic piece that holds the cluster to the cable. dont worry the cluster is good, just wanna know how to properly remove the speedo cable
and last question, what do you guys do about the odometer?

That cluster is out of a pre-77 model. They went to the 85 mph speedo in mid 77. You don't need to do anything different to use it. The calibration was in the speedometer not the drive.
To properly remove the cable from the speedo, on the plastic collar that hooks the cable to the unit there's a tab, squeeze this together and you can then pull the cable from the unit.
As for the odometer. They can be reset but it's a pita and legally questionable.

Agreed, both trucks had to have gauges or lights if you're wanting to swap the entire cluster and not just the speedometer. There are also some other year-to-year differences based on a seat belt warning light, economy light, etc. They are not universally interchangeable.
Another difference in speedometers is the location of the high-beam jewel.

to join in.... like kyle i pulled two different clusters out of older models trucks... 1. does it matter what printed circuit i used for my 74 and come to find out that the pin clip( i wanna say the 18 could be wrong) was broken prior to me removing it... will this affect my cluster not working other than the speedo? oh and all clusters match meaning all have gauges not idiot lights.

dowurk74,
Good advice; as usual...
Is the broken board on your original? Broken at the plug or burnt circuit?
There is a part number printed on the circuit board. If they match you can change over the board. If your original is good use it.
