Crumbling instrument cluster back: Very common on 1975/79 F100/350's, 1975/80 Econolines and 1978/79 Bronco's.
Ford made the instrument cluster back for these vehicles from a composition material that can TURN TO DUST before your very eyes.
In 1981, Ford came out with two hard plastic cluster backs. These were retrofitted into the earlier vehicles and...
E1PZ10848A .. Cluster Back-Use with gauges / Fits 1981/91 Econoline.
E1PZ10848B .. Cluster Back-Use with oil and amp Warning (idiot) Lights / Fits 1981/86 Econoline.
The speedo cable uses a clip to attach it to the speedo head.
It has been a while for me, but if I remember right you will fill the clip standing up as the cable end gets bigger, You dont remove it but pull the top of it back? (or foward don't remember ) holding it and push the cable housing in then pull it back and it will come off real easy.
The later plastic ones that numberdummy states can be found in the junk yards in the vans. I got one and transfered all stuff from mine to the mew one and they work great. I think you can get the cluster around here from the yards for under 20 bucks.
the part #s you show does Ford have these or are they gotten from another source
Obsolete as the dodo bird, but both can be found NOS from Ford Dealers, obsolete parts vendors.
And (as stated by 1977F250) from 1981/91 Econolines in wrecking yards. 1981/86 with idiot lights, 1981/91 with oil & amp gauges.
Since I listed the applications, I stated it too.
Some of the POS cluster backs were replaced by the hard plastic types under warranty, some by previous owners. But...many were never replaced, so the problem still exists 30 some years later.
Thank you all for the info - was able to get some slack and pull it off , saved all the parts . will get to yard and hunt for one also look on line. -- seperate Q. saw the cloth duct that goes to middle two vents it is hollier than thou - is there a easy way to get to it and replace
thanks again to all
As Numberdummy said, those are extremely hard to get in even a good used condition.
Best thing to do is to repair them useing a black colored duct tape. (Yes they do come in different colors)(what someone may have already done even) and wrap the ones you have now untill, or if, you can get a new set. Any colored duct tape will work though. Black is best only because it looks less cheesy.
If they are really bad off, you can use the aftermarket aluminum flexible tubes that are used to connect the heat riser control valves in the air cleaner to the exaust manifold heat riser adapter. Or the flexible ducts used on some of the air cleaner intakes. You just need to measure the circumfrence of the holes and mold the ends to fit and measure and stretch them to length.
