It Just pushes to one side and pulls out. If you push it into the speedo a little further and then try pushing it to the side it should pull right out then.
Thats the hardest part of the job, should have a tab that you push on like Eric said. Just stick with it and don't force anything, when you get it, it comes right off.
OK so I finally got back to this. It turns out the "tab" referred to in the service manual was oriented at 12 o'clock instead of where I would've expected something like this circa 6 o'clock. Once I figured that out, I used an angled pick to depress the tab and the speedo cable popped right out.
I discovered after removing the instrument cluster that several of the idiot lights don't illuminate because the bulb holders are absent!!!
I can believe that it'd depend on options. I have the push-button 4x4 up above the rear view mirror. (The Low Range doesn't engage, BTW.) In the manual, it says there are 4x4 and Low Range indicator lights in the instrument cluster. Those are two of the vacant holes. The others escape me, but I believe one is oil pressure. There are also areas designated in the manual as "blank window" which are, in fact, covered by the circuit board.
So do you think the P. O. had the "extra" 4x4, Low Range, and other bulbs removed when the speedo cable was replaced? Certainly would be consistent with some of the other clues I've seen left in this car.
One thing for sure: the grain-of-wheat light bulb for the EMISS light sure ain't a "194" bulb as the rest of these lights are supposed to be.
Any light (!) anyone can shed on this subject is greatly appreciated.
P. S. My hands and neck STILL hurt from screwing around trying to get the speedo cable out til I figured out it was just upside-down!!!
Speaking of, I'll probably have to pull mine apart to see if the EMISS light is burned out. It is supposed to light up momentarily when you start the vehicle, and mine DOESN'T. If mine stays on... I can only hope it's not going to be a pain in the a** to trace down the problem, as I got NO error codes last time I pulled them off the ECU/ECM.
I thought the pushbutton (cr*p) 4x4 indicators were on the buttons themselves? I know the MANUAL transfer case has the bulbs in the instrument cluster.
Oh, it was probably "upside down" because you were upside down... maybe lol
Many times the bulbs are removed to mask a problem. Had someone do it with the van I just bought. It didn't show up because it was Duraspark II and the output to the idiot light does not register on the tester like it would on an OBDII.
Yeah, previous owner actually put a piece of black electrical tape over the EMISS light because he apparently didn't know how to reset it.
In any case, it sounds like I ought to head down to the dealer and find out what bulbs/holders go into the empty sockets and see what lights up (now that I know how to detach the speedo cable).
