When I took my dash apart to replace the instrument cluster lamps, something must have happened to my speedometer because it reads almost 30 mph too fast. The needle started pointing almost straight down and as I accelerate it rapidly starts reading faster and faster. I cant imagine I messed up the cable but there is that possibility. Where do I even start? I have an extra instrument cluster if I need parts.
Probably dirt or something got into the speedo drive drum while you were changing out the lamps. Have to pull the speedo head and clean/ relube it. Another possablity is the hair spring on the dial broke or somehow moved out of adjustment.
I doubt the speedo cable is causing the problem unless its causing a speedo needle wobble at some speeds. I am fighting that right now on my 89 F250, speedo cable will cause the needle to wobble at 55mph.... was 35mph wobble before I remove the cluster......

Dang, I was hoping I wouldn't have to disassemble the dash again…Oh well, it's not too hard. I will start with that and just maybe that will solve it. I hope you get your speedometer solved too
4 times for me on my cluster issue, going to 5th when I pull the speedo cable out and clean/relube it and hope that fixes the wobble for me.
Just be careful with the wire harness plugs, that Mylar pcboard on the back of the cluster do not like multiple plugging in and out and will peel apart.
