I've searched these forums pretty well, but haven't run across this yet, I hope someone can help. My truck is a '97 F-350 with a 7.3 and an E40D, 4 WD. It was hit in a parking lot back in June and it took 5 months to get it repaired to my satisfaction. When I picked it up at the body shop, the batteries were dead and the shop jumped it. On my way driving it home from the body shop, I was putting it through the paces and everything seemed to be working fine. As I drove home on the freeway, I was going about 70 mph and all of a sudden the truck "jumped" like it had been thrown into reverse! At the same time, the tranny shifted into 3rd gear. I slowed down to about 40 mph and nursed it home. About 5 minutes later, the O/D light on the shifter started blinking. I knew this meant that a code had been set. I pulled over and got out, looked under the truck and noticed a very slight fluid drip from the torque converter cover. I also noticed the 1-2 and 2-3 shift was very hard. I didn't drive it anymore that day. The next day I took it to a local shop and the guy plugged his computer in and told me there were 6 different codes stored, one of them being low voltage on the CPS. He wouldn't tell me what the other codes were, just said they all indicated internal transmission problems! He said he would need to put it up on the rack and drop the pan to check any further. I told I would need to bring it back later. He cleared the codes and sent me on my way. After clearing the codes, the transmission seemed to shift normally again, except it wouldn't even attempt to go into O/D. The leak at the converter stopped as well. I have been driving it very easy and keeping the speed under 40 mph. I also have been keeping the O/D off, but when I do try to put it in O/D, it does a little "slip" like it wants to go there, but stays in 3rd. I've called several shops in the area and they all tell me they will need to pull the pan and see what parts are laying in it! Any help would be appreciated. The tranny was replaced with a factory rebuild at around 100,000 miles and then was rebuilt and the torque converter changed at 150,000 miles by a Ford dealer. It now has 190,000 miles. Thank you in advance!
Mark, thanks for the reply. I guess there is no way now to get the codes then huh? Are they stored in the computer somewhere? Ever since the guy cleared it, even though I have tried to get it to shift into O/D, the light does not flash, so i assume no new (or old) codes have been re-set? I thought that was kind of strange. If the problem still exists, why doesn't it reset the codes and the light start flashing again?
