Well if it is not one thing it is another. Help! Was driving my 96 xlt 351 home yesterday and it seemed to be shifting funny then the overdrive light on the gear shifter started to blink on and off. Pulled over restarted the truck all was fine driveing perfect again. On the way to work it started doing it again. What is going on. Please dont tell me the tranny is going. I am open to ideas.
The flashing OD light does indicate a problem. I'm not sure about the procedure to pull codes from the tranny, but I'm sure somebody around here is. Have you checked the fluid level?
No that would be the logical thing to do. I will do that when i get out of work. But i noticed the torque converter do waht is called chattering which i knwo does no physical damage to anything as long as you dont mind the the chattering or shaking it does. So i am thinking it is going to be more then the fluids but never know. I jsut have changed everything possible in the truck and this would be the last thing to go wrong. and it is only at 95,000 so if anyone knows how to pull the codes I am all ears. I have heard that the blinking itself is a code. Is this true? And if so how do you read it?
No, the blinking doesn't flash a code out - you have to have it pulled, but many parts stores do it free now. The transmission codes are pulled the same way the engine codes are - but the trans codes turn on the OD light instead of the ENG light.
ok well I serviced the tranny and drained the torque converter. No metal that i could see in the converter or the tranny. !5 quarts later it is full again and seems to have lost all signs of the shuttering/Chattering which ever you want to call it. But i drove it to work today and the nit started to blink again. But showing no symtoms. Could it be that the computer codes need to be pulled so it stops that or does it mean if it starts to blink again there are more problems that i just cant feel? HELP!
diggum,
Is the od light flashing a repetitive sequence or is it a random on/off series?
Is the latter, my 96 E4OD's was shining intermittently (at speeds from 5 to 65 MPH) due to under dash wiring harness short; which finally blew the fuse.
Here is a thread on this possibility:
OK so let me just double check this. Steve you believe that if the codes are still there and i fixed the problem. It would still set off the OD light and make me have to reset the codes even if there was no a problem anymore? If so you mentioned that some stores pull the codes for free. Do you know which ones do this? thanks.
OK as for the other. The light just starts blinking and will continue to blink in a perfect pattern not like a loose wire. and it will not stop till i turn of the truck and restart it. But once it does start blinking then the hard shift starts because the computer can't make the right adjustment for the shift. But as soon usally wheni am still driving i just put it in neutral and then turn the key on then right back on and put it back in drive and it is fine again till it decides it is going to do it again. so Hope that helps the explaining more so.
I had this on my truck. The shifter solenoid in the tranny was bad. I found this out at the dealership. the light would always go out after I restart the truck. Once I drove over 25 miles per hour for over 5 minutes the light would start to blink. Then at stop and go traffic it would bang from 1st to 2nd.
If these are your symptoms- its cheaper to buy a new tranny. $2400
ouch - but shes all better now
Cheaper that buying a new truck- Why would you even think about getting rid of your brono over a little thing like that
Trust me i dont really want to get rid of it. Although i have test drive twice now the new F350 and it is pretty. but i Love my Bronco. well when your did this did it always do no matter what non fail. I drove it home yesterday no problems and i drove in this morning no problems. and that is with 30 min on the freeway at 55 and 75 the whole way. Seems to be shifting great no problems and all the shuttering from the torque converter stopped.
