Ok, now that my truck is completely up and running I need to tackle the odds and ends. First off, I am running all aftermarket gauges so I don't have any power hooked up except the glow plugs and shutoff. It seems to not idle down, and sounds like a PSD so I'm figuring the cold start stuff is operational when it's not powered. It also does a full glow even when the engine is at operating temperature.
None of the wiring diagrams I have say anything about the high idle or cold start specifically, except that it's integral with the FSS and gets it's power from the key switch.
Is there something hooked up wrong? Do I need power to one of the temp sensors, or is there something I'm just completely missing?
Sounding like a PSD and high idle, means your cold timing advance is stuck on, and so is your high idle solenoid. Try lubing the high idle shaft, might just be seized out, giving high idle.
Yup. I'm not having a lot of luck finding what is what though. There is a solenoid that hits the linkage arm, I'm assuming for a/c (engine is from a truck that had a/c), it's retracted and not an issue.
All the diagrams I can find are for the backwards GM pumps, and they just show the terminal for the cold start.
Should the cold start terminal be powered with the key on?
Power on that circuit is supposed to go from the ignition switch to the glow plug relay, then to the FSS, then to a temp switch that opens when hot, then to the high idle solenoid & cold advance solenoid. Try disconnecting the high idle & cold advance. If the idle drops & it sounds like an IDI instead of a PSD, then either it's hooked up incorrectly, or the temp switch is bad.
The temp switch your talking about is the one under the Alternator right?
I think mine might be bad on the camper, I fired it up a week ago, after sitting for 2 months, left it running for over an hour, and the timing advance never came off, neither did the high idle. hmmmm
I'll have to give that a shot tomorrow.
Is the external solenoid the only high idle device, or is there an internal bit along with the advance? When I'm decelerating, I get pretty much no engine braking, and the truck this came from had quite a bit.
I'm also not past having an actual problem with the pump anyways, the engine sat for about a year, and there is a small leak from the advance cam plunger at the lower left of the pump.
