Hey guys, just have a quick question. What causes the engine to high idle on cold mornings???? My guess is that when the EBPV kicks on it puts a load on the engine and the engine fights back by compensating the load by raising the RPMs. I notice that mine dosent high idle when i start it up in the cold mornings up here in Maryland, but i do have to plug it in for about an hour before i start it because i have about 4 glow plugs out. And i did disconnect the EBPV because it was staying on when i was driving.
Hey Welcome to FTE!!! I'm not sure what your asking.. Are you asking about how to get your truck to high idle? you need a chip with a high idle setting. Its not something it does by itself. The EBPV helps warm up the engine when its really cold out and thats an automatic thing but it doesnt change the idle.
I don't believe it has anything to do with the EBPV. It is a signal from the computer that adds the fuel to raise the rpm's on cold mornings to help warm it up and make sure it stays running. As the engine warms up the idle will slowly go down until it hits the normal one.
Another trick to do on those cold mornings is turn the defrost on as it will give it a little more fuel than normal. (It is probably minute, but I've heard several guys mention this before).
Thanks for the replies, just curious because i was watching a video on a forum on here called Cold Start Video Threads and one guy started his up in the dark, but he manually could control his EBPV so he got back in the truck and flipped the switch to the EBPV and the RPMs in his truck went to like 1000RPMs, thats why i thought maybe the EBPV had something to do with the high idle.
The video is on page 13 at the bottom, when your in the forum Cold Start Video Threads its on the second page. Its the only video on the page and the guys name is "2 stroke man" its a dark video but he gets a shot of the tach and him flipping a switch. Check it out and tell me what you think he has.
I believe all the stick shift trucks have a high idle setting programmed in for cold starts and 99 and up all trucks have it. My 94 will go to 1100 rpm on cold mornings and drop down slowly as the oil warms up. The 03 I had went to 1500 when it was real cold. My 97 didn't do anything. It was a little sluggish in the mornings needless to say.
O i see, thats kinda interesting why Ford stopped putting that feature on the 96 and 97 models and then started installing it back on the 98 and up models. Thanks for the replies.
My truck has high idle but only when it is real cold runs at 900 rpm till the oil gets a bit warm I also have an AIC that is set for 1350rpm I use it every day.

I haven't watched the video but this trucks did not come with an actual high idle. Some of the SD's might have the AIC on them from factory though.
Most tuners/programers/chips have a high idle function.
My truck when I start it up when its cold idles at 1100 RPM's for about a minute or two, then it goes down to 900 RPM's. Is this what your truck is doing? If so its a parameter when the water is a certian tempature. It does it to help warm it up, like the EBPV. Its part of the system.

Nope, when i start it up cold it stays at one idle speed all the time. The only time it idles up is when i put it in gear, than it will jump up 50 RPMs or so, i know thats normal.
