Unhappy No crank

Just survived the Colo Feb blizzard. Truck lives outside, so could have moisture anywhere. Spent hour and half with snow blower clearing the drive. Went to start the beast to back up so I could clear the snow from the rest of the drive and NO CRANK! Hmmmm, never had this happen before. Not that cold, 20F. Pulled key, locked, unlocked doors, heard horn honk, hmmmmm try again, no crank. Dead when key turned to start. Interesting. Pulled key, re insert, put truck in diagnostic mode, no DTCs reported, battery at 11.6. Seems a little low. Tried the key and viola! Starts up, but idles rough for about 10 secs, then all normal.
Wondering if truck 'thought' it was in the anti-theft mode????

Ran around, got coffee, everything normal. Curious!

Any one else see anything like this?

I'll bet that had your butt puckering for a minute or two- haven't heard that happen to anyone yet, but maybe I missed it.

Question: did you wait for the glow plug light to go out? I know it's real quick but just a thougt

Also had long had it sat since last time it was started.

First thing...is to get your multi-meter and check voltage at the battery while SD is running. Should be 14.2 or 14.4 volts.

11.6 is pretty much a dead battery. 12.3 is considered low. At least in my experience...

IMHO...sounds like you need a new battery...if it isn't keeping or holding a charge.

Maybe the computer won't allow the engine to crank if the voltage is below a certain threshold?
For the batteries, I've always been told if one is dead, replace them both.

Here's what I know:

11.6 was reported by the screen in the engineering test mode, not a multimeter. This means ignition was on and the glow plug circuits should have been active. While the Glow Plug circuit is active, 11.6 is not that bad. Glow plugs draw a HEAVY load. Usually will see around 12.2 when no load on battery's and motor not running. 14.2 normal voltage when motor is running.

Truck is run at least once every day.

Once the truck decided to start, starter spun normally, truck started right up.

Temp was only 3F this am, truck fired right up!

The horn honk was very curious when I was locking and unlocking the truck using the key fob. Definitely was not a result of pushing lock twice on the fob which also gives a confirmation honk.

As of now, I'm thinking a moisture related transient.

Likely so, did you drive it during the storm? It seems like lots of snow gets sucked up into the engine compartment during operation, could be some moisture got into a bad place and froze. If your place is like mine, I had enough wind to leave 4-6 ft. drifts in my driveway. Had to get the backhoe out to clear the driveway and road, no way the PU was going anywhere until that was done.

I'm still a little leary about driving mine when it's snowing hard, have heard a few complaints about snow plugging up the air filter. I've never had a problem with that in my Dodge Cummins so I drive it when the weather turns to crap. Besides, I have better tires on the Ram, Cooper Discoverer M/S which grip pretty good on snow. My Michelin ATs on the Ford are marginal despite only having 8K miles on them.

Does anyone know how much current these new glow plugs draw? I think the old ones in the 7.3s pulled around 50A per plug so 400 A when energized.

Had driven day before in storm (gotta have my *bucks ). Didn't get that much wind, but truck definitely had snow everywhere.
The Michelin's really suck (but they have 34k on them). Sorta like driving on skis They will be going bye-bye this week.

Jermont. Possible clean both set of batt cables. With moisture could be it.
