My V-10 Story............6.7 fuel issue analogy

You will see in my sig line, I've owned 2 V-10 Excursions. What I forgot to mention was that there was a Dodge in between.

A certain number of years ago while on my first Ex, I read this very Forum to be informed. Well, all of a sudden members were experiencing spark plug blowing out of heads. (It seems a not enough threads in head.)

After a few weeks of this, I thought I'd better get rid of my Ex quick before I was a victim. I traded in on a new Dodge, gave Ex away. 9 months later I missed my Ex, searched the midwest for what I wanted and traded again. Got a great price on slightly used Ex, but cost me an easy 5 grand whole deal.

Afterwords it occurred to me it was a vocal handle of owners vs. silent majority of owners.

Side note; I don't remember Ford covering head work.

if you came in witha set of autolites in installed that was a possibel outcome. failer to clean the holes out prior ito install was a knowen concern of it happening.

I was one who had a spark plug blow right out of the head at 130,000 miles. It was in Iowa in January coming west on I-80 with 1,000 miles in front of me. I disconnected the coil and fuel injector plug on that cylinder and continued on no problem (except for sounding like a lawnmower the whole way). The dealer told me I needed a new head, plugs and coils for a total of $6,000. I did my own research and discovered Time-Sert. I did not install it myself but watched a guy do it in less than two hours. Amazing, better than factory (by far) and only $250. He also changed out the rest of the plugs. I didn't have any further problems. The bottom line is that Ford really did screw up on that part of the Triton V10 design but the rest of the Excursion package was an amazing vehicle.

From "pop-tart" spark plugs on 2-valve engines to spark plugs that REFUSE to come out (at least not in one piece) on 3-valve engines.

my point was, the HPFP has me alarmed as well as anyone. I'm just not sure if its a small deal blown up by internet. Or if its going to affect us all.

What I understood from you is the HPFP is certainly a concern but don't run off and sell your truck.
That's how I feel. I'm concerned but my truck isn't going anywhere!

I'll give an extreme example.
In 2009 my house was struck by lightning.
I lost almost every electronic device connected to electrical power; AC units included.
The insurance guy's first comment was "You're lucky the house didn't burn."
Doesn't mean I'm going to run out and live in a hole in the ground where it's safe!

when I had a mustang another problem was spark plugs breaking inside the head. that was on an '07 model, never knew that they had plugs that would blow out of the engine. this is one thing that really sucks about car makers, when there is a problem with a part FIX IT in subsequent models.

You echo my thought exactly. I am going to drive it like a good one until it prove otherwise to me. That doesn't mean I don't feel very sorry for the owners that had had HPF issues.

Just a quick fact to support your statement. I just visited my dealer today as I received an email notice that I was due for a 10,000 mile check. Turned out all that is an oil change/fluid check so I didn't need a thing. I asked the service manager if he has seen many 6.7's lately. He said they have been trouble free with no issues other than regular maintenance. I asked if there were any HPFP issues and again the answer was no. I stopped by the parts department for some PM-22 and asked if they have had any parts replacement on the 6.7 and again asked about the HPFP. He said that they have never had to order or replace an HPFP yet and that the 6.7 was proving to be reliable.

I also asked for locking lug nuts for my truck (20" wheels) and they said that there isn't one available yet. I am certain that there is so if anyone out there has a tip I would appreciate it.

My dealer stated that there has not been any issues here yet, but they look to me for some answers b/c of this forum and I put more miles on my vehicles in a month than many do in a year. I seem to have the probloms first. I do find it goes through alot of def.

I find that the more I tow the more DEF that my truck uses. I have been told that is normal behavior. I use about a gallon in 1000 miles towing but a lot less when driving empty.

Higher DEF usage is due to higher temps which we all see when there's a load.
1,000 miles per 1 gallon isn't that bad.
