The plastic vacuum lines (whatever happened to the rubber ones we used to use) on my 96 F250 on the passenger side of the engine have broken. They're the ones going to the vacuum reserve tank. It looks like they run under the plenum and back into who-knows-where. How big a task will it be to replace this thing and is there a way to just fix the lines instead of replacing? 5.8L engine, if that matters.
^^^ What he said. I've found the stiffer, clear vinyl tubing to be a tighter fit. You can find it at the hardware store, and a little glue makes sure the joints stay together.
I patched the lines with clear vinyl tubing this morning. I'm going to wait for the silicone goop to cure (24 hours recommended) before I fire it up, but I'm hoping this will eliminate the omnipresent "check engine" light on the dash and that the gas mileage will improve now. With 176,000 miles on the truck, I plan to replace the fuel filter as well, but one thing at a time.
