Broken Vacuum Lines

'93 F-150, 302

Contrary to my "if it aint broke..." philosophy, I decided to change out plugs/wires (after about 125K miles since last time). In changing out no. 1, I broke the little straw like vacuum lines (red & Blue/black?) leading to the coffee can/ vacuum reservoir. It wasn't hard ..just barely touching them snapped them clean. Becasue they were so very brittle I'm not sure they werent cracked or were functioning prior. Anyway, seems to be running about the same as before.

I have three questions.

How do I replace them?
What do I ask for from parts store?
What kind of trouble should I expect until I replace them?

Thanks a bunch for any advice, help or similar stories.

i broke those same lines and i just took some rubber tubes that were slightly bigger and stuck both ends of the lines in it and it works good.

I ripped all of my emmissions stuff (vaccuum lines, smog pump, carbon boxes, etc) out, and runs perfect, well actually better than before but whatever.

Most auto places sell small rubber vacuum hose in various inside diameters to match what you need to replace what you have.

I broke the same exact lines doing the same exact thing and thats what i did.. worked just fine if not better!

However, I left it alone for a while after I broke it and didn't replace it after it broke and I kept getting a Check Engine Soon light after running the engine for about 5 mins. Put the rubber tube on, light went away

Heat shrink works the best in my opinion. Heat shrink is cheap, the seal is perfect.

I saw in a couple of engine rebuild threads that it's a good idea to replace all of these when pulling the engine.

Is that the way to go, or is it better to make your own as you guys described?

If they're still in good shape I'd reuse them. My "younger" 95 still has a perfect harness and they aren't brittle at all. I've come across a few very good harnesses at junkyards too.

But if they are brittle and breaking all the time it's probably best to replace them. A homemade harness probably won't look or fit as good as factory, but may work better.

One thing I was always going to do is use air line for heavy trucks. The lines going to the transmission splitter are the perfect diameter and made out of hard plastic similar to our vacuum lines. I don't think they get as brittle over time though. I bought some awhile ago and it's really cheap. The rubber ends of our vacuum lines fit perfectly. I fixed the famous leaking white a/c recirc door line this way.

Thanks a bunch all.

This site has saved me money/frustration, taught me a thing or two about my truck and expy and made me laugh as well. I reckon this kind of collaborative information exchange is about the best thing going on the net.

I've used heat shrink and I've also pulled them off salvage trucks.

I used Dorman's Vacu-Tite! hard emission/vacuum tubing in 1/8" o.d. to replace mine. https://www.dormanproducts.com/ and search for part # 47417. Your auto parts supplier should also sell soft rubber vacuum connectors that slip over the line to hook the new and old lines together.

You can by the coffee can from LMC for around $40 one line has air going in to the "coffee can" and the other sucks the air out of the "can" so you can either replace it or just tie the vacuum lines up out of the way. Mine broke and before I got my new resevoir shipped I just put a piece of rubber hose in each of the lines forming a complete circuit. worked fine and my truck ran normal. 10 mpg with a 302 ...Love heavy trucks with underpowered engins
