i have a similar issue with my 390, but i have changed push rods and lifters with new milling brand. when i pull the VC's oil shoots out of the rockers like crazy. my noise is on the pass side. sounds like lifter to cam noise. is it possible that the timing chain is loose and causing backlash?

Yes the chain could be and prolly is loose.
If its original it's got nylon teeth IIRC.
When you pulled the vc did you mean oil falls out?
If so your returns are blocked.
I would start a thread of your own related to your truck so that you can be specific about things.
