GV "is" way too pricey. I already have two late AOD's and two '03-up Police 4R70W's, so that part is easy. It just occurred to me that AOD's must be pretty common in the '80-'86 camp, right? Easy to find trans mount? Another Junkyard post?

Towing will be passenger car and light truck under 7000 lbs easily, combined with trailer weight. Former E-250 with 3.31's yanked this stuff around like a boss, as they say. Van was weighed on certified scales many years ago at 4950 lbs, empty with one full tank of gas. Not sure what the F truck weighs, but I'm thinking a little bit lighter than that.

AOD's are fairly common, but I'd guess the bulk of the transmissions are C6's. Lots of discussions about the lack of strength of the AOD as well as the .67:1 OD, which is considered by many to be way too much as it makes even 4.11's into 2.75's.

Quite true for the old AOD's, but the Police wide ratios have upgraded internals. First is 2.84, and OD is .7 for those boxes. Lots of aftermarket parts have come out since the early AOD's made their reputation.

Other option is Super Wide toploader 4-speed. OD is .81, first is 3.29. Would have to find somebody with pedal-to-lower rod parts from 351. I have trans, bell, flywheel, fork, TO bearing, shifter. Probably the best combo without changing out the rear gears. Unsure of the hassle involved in changing pedals. Maybe not bad.

Several here have swapped in a ZF5. I haven't - yet. But, the ZF is sitting in back of the truck.
