Quick Engine Swap ?

Hi guys. The 460 in my '83 F-250 is getting tired, and I'd like to swap in a fresh 351W. Same frame mounts or different? Any other items to consider? Going from C6 to C6, so same there.

351W is a small block, 460 is a big block, so you would at least have to address the motor mounts as well as use a C6 with a small-block bellhousing.

I am not sure if all the 460 trucks had an option called "Hot Fuel" (some fancy electronic fuel system setup), so you may have to address that too. I am not sure which years had it and which didn't.

Are you considered freshening up your 460 instead of doing an entire engine and transmission swap? It may be cheaper to fix what you have.

Thanks, here's further. The 460 is a gas eater. This 351W saw duty in my old E-250 at nearly twice the mileage as the 460 under the same driving conditions. The 351 will go into the truck with its current SB C6 attached. If the BB C6 has a different tailhousing that affects the mount position, I can swap out housings.

The fuel system is carbed with a return line. I've already played with that stuff, so no mysteries there. I know most frame mounts are different between big and small blocks, but I just learned that the intermediate Fords from 72 up take the same frame side mount for either engine size, so I'm verifying the situation with my truck before I go chasing something I don't need. I understand that the engine side mounts are different.

Look up the motor mounts for a 83 f250 and then your e250. If they take the same motor mounts, it might work out that you can also use the e250 frame brackets if you need them for the 83 frame.

The 460 and 351W have different frame perches. You can use frame perches from a 302 for the 351W, however.

Thanks, Fordzilla. I'll see if I can score a set in the Parts Section.

Franklin2: The van's engine mounts cross over to a number of vehicles, and it is a '76, so no sure answer that way.

If not, post a Want to Buy ad, or post in the Junkyard Wishlist sticky and I'm sure someone will be able to get you going.

Ya know, I've run across trucks with their engines (and sometimes front clips) removed, would have been pretty easy to get those things if they're bolted in (if riveted, fuhgettaboutit).

It for some reason never occurred to me, though.

In my area, it's actually rare to see an engine pulled from a truck. At my favorite yard, out of about twenty 1980-1996 F-Series trucks, only one has a missing engine.

Needless to say, I'm gonna be one unhappy camper if I find a 351M/400 truck that has it's perches riveted on. My original 300 perches were bolted on, which was absolutely great.

Draggin - Sent you a PM. I have a pair of small-block perches that are bolted on, and should have the mounts themselves. Is that what you are looking for? And, the transmission mount?

Not sure exactly, but these are/were on an '82 F50.

I gotta think that a bunch of guys in this forum have gone in the other direction with a swap, from 351 to 460, and have the SB perches sitting around.

Yesterday was the first time I really read a bunch of posts in this Bullnose forum. I have to say I like the amount of shared info and everybody's attitude. I have a pretty extensive background with Ford musclecars, but I am way behind on trucks. I am choosing to resurrect this '83 instead of spending money on a new truck, so we'll see how it goes over the coming months.

I put a post into the Junkyard section to start off with.

Sent you a return PM. Sounds good so far. I'm thinkin' there is no difference in trans mount, as it's probably going from a BB C6 to a SB C6. I am somewhat entertaining the idea of putting 4R70W guts into an AOD case so I can have an overdrive with the 3.73 gears. But not decided. If anyone has a solution for an AOD trans mount in this truck, let me know!

Thanks guys!

The toughest OD option is a gear vendors OD bolted to the back of a C6, but that's rather pricey.....

And, since I've heard they are out of business, parts are getting hard to find and very pricey. But, maybe I heard incorrectly? (Btw, RW, do you wanna come up and use the press on the U-joints?)

Draggin - Responded to PM.

I don't know if they are still around or not. I suspect that the big 3 making their own OD trans likely killed their market......

Gary, I don't use a press for u-joints. A vise works so much better, but I don't use it the way many others do. I just use it as a work bench
