I am looking at putting a 460 in place of the tired old 6 in the farm truck. I found an early 1970's something or other Mercury Grand Marquis Famly Wagon (man they made them big!) with a 460 and C6, factory Holly 4bbl (not sure what size) running good with 45000 origional miles
My question is do the big block engines use the same frame motor mount towers as the small block V8's? If not what size engines have the proper mount towers for an 82 F150.
And will the mounts bolted to the engine in the car be of any use or will they need to be changed?
L&L makes a 460 conversion, but it'll hit your wallet real hard. To go about it cheaper, find a crossmember from a F250/350 that had a 460 and get it to fit in your truck.
You might want to consider a head swap before dropping that 460 into your truck. Some of the early 4 barrel models had nearly 11:1 compression from the factory, and even if the compression is more pump gas friendly the valve seats won't last with unleaded fuel. I think compression dropped 2-3 points starting in 73, but the valve seats are still an issue.
I think Ford started using hardened seats in 76. The larger chambers started in 72 or 73 on most models, but some police and special service engines still had compression.
Thanks. What psi should I get with my compression guage with the high 11:1 compression? This engine has very low miles and seems very tight in the short time that I had it running.
