First Start Takes Numerous Attempts

Not too cold here in California Bay Area but it has been down in the low 30's in the morning. The truck doesn't want to start up right away. Usually, after about 2-8 attempts it will fire up. Don't have a problem after that. Never did this before in same weather/early morning. New batteries. Other threads were not helpful. Any suggestions where to start...no pun intended. Thanks.

Turn the key, then sit on your hands for 60 seconds.....time it, then crank and report back.

Not a CA truck I'm guessing? Got white smoke while cranking? If it's not a CA truck, read the cold start sticky thread at the top of this section and test your GPR.

There should also be instructions there to check the glow plugs with an ohm meter.

There is smoke (unburned fuel) under the hood. The truck is in Ca though I am 3rd owner. Away through tomorrow sO I will need to wait to sit on hands. If it starts after 60 what might that mean? Thanks.

F350-6 was wondering if your truck has a GPR or gpcm?

Tried starting the truck today....which unusually cold...down in the high 20's. No go...turns over....kicks a few times like it might start...fuel build up (can smell it). How long does it take to warm up the truck when you plug it in? Does that also charge the battery? Not sure what the GPM is. Thanks!

Got truck started on second try after waiting 30 minutes. Found a sticky on cold start that talks about GPM, etc. I'll start there and see if that is the issue....sounds most likely...hopefully. Thanks guys.

usually an hour will get one fired up when plugged in..

The link (woodnthings work) below has a picture of the 3 types of Glow plug controllers. The relay on the top left picture is what most of us have. If your truck was originally sold in ca, it could have the relay on the right or it could have the module shown in the top of the 2nd wiring schematic which is basically a silver box with two connectors mounted on the valve cover. That one is the only one that can send a fault code to the pcm if there is an issue in it.
