With the cold weather we are having, I decided to leave my truck sitting outside all night to see how well it will do under a cold start the next morning.
News said it was 6 outside and truck said 11.
Its my 2012 power stroke and I was amazed at how well it did. I have never had a diesel that didn't struggle in extreme cold.
It is amazing, isn't it? I know some of the northern most dwellers have experience temps pretty deep into the negative zone, but I'm still amazed at how well mine starts at -2F. We only had one day that cold and few others between 0 and 10. Hit the remote start button and it doesn't even wait 2 seconds to start. Other than the high idle, you would never know anything was any different from a 70F start! The old 6.0 would have probably required more than one start and still would have missed and hammered for a few minutes after startup.
thats awesome. I didn't get the shot of the exhaust on mine but I did notice the little bit of smoke and I think steam coming out the back when she fired up in the bitter cold.
Has anybody had an issue with their 6.7 NOT coming off of high idle when you step on the brake?
My 2012 F350 6.7 is at the dealership right now and they seem stumped at this point.
My 6.0 diesel would idle down as soon as I stepped on the brake pedal.
The 6.7 won't idle down unless it's warm enough. If I plug it in it will start at normal idle speed. If it's below 15F or so it's high idle.
My truck will idle down in drive also but, only because of the load that is being put on the truck from the drivetrain.
As soon as I put it in Park or Neutral it idles back up.
A friend with the exact same issue nearly caused a crash when he was approaching a stop sign, put on the brakes and the front tires started sliding on the ice and the back tires continued to push him into the intersection from the high idle situation.
He had to put the truck in Neutral to stop!
It is normal behavior from what I have seen and read. I can see where it would be a problem on ice. Good thing your buddy has good common sense! I know the 6.0s will idle down when you touch the brake, but I haven't seen a 6.7 back off the high idle yet. Thankfully the tranny is pretty smooth, otherwise it would be pretty scary putting it in gear at 1200 rpm!
Yeah you can tell the 'high idle' torque is there... you have to apply a bit more braking pressure to keep the vehicle still when it is trying to high idle in Drive and in 1st gear.
Reason #80,243 why manual transmissions should still be offered in vehicles here... they are everywhere else in the world...
