Computer?
Anyone have an idea where to begin to troubleshoot? Dash readout runs in reverse! As I decelerate my milage shows poorer, 6-8 mpg, than when I am excelerating, 26-28mpg. It gets very poor milage overall, 8 to 12 mpg hiway or town. Change was abrupt a few months ago from 12 to 16 mpg averages. Seems like the computer is tied into both problems but I have no check engine light on. '97 Expedition, 5.4L 4x4 with 125K mi.
A. This may be part of a known dashboard instrument cluster solder problem.
B. The overheard mileage/compass computer malfunctioning.
C. Your windshield leaking on to the fusebox and GEM .
D. None of the above
These vehicles have a number of 'computers' and I'm no expert at those.
Did this trouble start after a rainy period?
If so, do a search here for GEM (Generic Electronic Module).
Does the truck operate normally, no rough idling?
Even though the CEL (check engine light) is not on you can go to Autozone or a local auto parts store and get them to use their Code Reader to see if there are any Codes pending. Call around and see which store can do this for you for free.
