I know how inaccurate the OH computer is when it comes to the avg. mpg and the miles to empty. But just out of sheer curiosity, what does your OH computer say about how many avg. mpg you're getting? What about when you fill up? How many miles to empty?
Ok, let me rephrase my own question(s). How inaccurate is the OH computer when it comes to fuel mileage and miles to empty? For example, I just went through a full tank of diesel. According to the OH computer I had 717 miles to empty. When I checked it against the trip odometer, it came out between 790 and 800 miles to empty. When in reality I got nowhere close to either 790 or 800, but 702 before I filled up. It also said that my avg. mpg was 16.1. Now that I've checked it by calculator, the OH computer was almost dead on. Is there a fix or a flash for how inaccurate the OH computer is? Anyone with input on this is more than welcomed to post. Thanks in advance.
I've had MANY cars with trip computers and MPG calculaters that were perfectly correct, but both Ex's I've had, '02 & '03, were horrible with the fuel calculations...
Complained to the dealer twice and their answer was to leave a copy of the owners manual page where it says you have to be level and at the same pump and... Very bush league !
What strikes me is if they can't get a simple mpg calculation right, what are they doing with the complex calculations in the pcm ???
But, if the mpg is the only thing wrong with an otherwise GREAT vehicle - I guess it's ok with me !
I can somewhat undrestand the miles to empty when you first fill up...
In my owners manual it says that the 'Miles to empty' in the overhead computer is figured on the last 500 miles driven. It is not necessarily based on the MPG the computer is currently showing.
I would assume, therefore if you change back and forth between driving styles or load and unload a trailer or vary from city to highway driving it could throw off the calculations.
My OH on fill-up says I have anywhere from 856 to 981 miles to empty, MPG is 19.6-19.9. Using ye-ol-reliable calculator method, I get 16-17.5 MPG, depends on how much I get into the tank. More important how much diesel I burn blasting off from red lights or "keeping up" with the flow on the highways.

How are you getting that kind of mileage?!?!? The Highest I've EVER seen my X say on that thing is 717 miles to empty. The highest average miles per gallon was 17. Seeing as you and I have the same year X (2001), what did you do and how did you do it?
Man I wish I had a diesel, I've got the 6.8L V10 and my OH averages about 430-460 mile till empty and average about 12 mpg city driving, HWY driving on a 900 mile trip I filled up twice and averaged about 14.5 @ 75mph......
Average in price of 87oct vs diesel gas prices lately assuming diesel owners have a 44gl tank....
Gas @ $1.51 X 44 = $66.44 assume 11mpg average
Diesel @ $1.80 x 44 = $79.20 assume 15mpg average
Gas: 484mpt / 20,000 mile per year = 41.32 tanks of gas
Diesel: 660mpt / 20,000 miles per year = 30.30 tanks of gas
Gas: $66.44 X 41.32 = $2745.30 per year fuel cost
diesel: $79.20 X 30.30 = $2399.76 per year fuel cost
Wow, you guys have expensive diesel! Generally here in SE MN, diesel is about 10-15 cents a gallon cheaper than regular. In the winter, they're usually about the same price.
The reason my OH indicates 800 to 980 is due to the SCMT (tuner). On average I can get 650-670 miles before the warning light comes on and I pump about 42 gals into that 44 gal tank. Like I said best I can get is around 17.5 MPG. Using 17MPG as an average the OH should indicate 750 after a fill, so the microtuner has knocked it off about 100 to 200 miles. AS for Diesel in NJ, it around 1.359
In the little bit of driving I've done so far, I'm thinking that the OH mileage computer is pretty much useless. I'm still going to calculate my mileage by hand and I'm still going to watch the fuel gauge to tell me when to get fuel. Maybe they'll grow on me after a while (only have 400 miles on it so far) if they prove accurate. Nice to have the compass but it'd be even nicer if there was some mode that displayed only the compass.

My o/h does the same thing with my SCMT. It registers 1.5 to 1.7 mpg to high.
My wife gets 15 to 15.5 in town and has actually got 22 on the o/h computer (20.6-mpg hand figured and with the old skinny Firestone tires) on a trip to her sister's house at 58 mph. I have NEVER heard the end on this one !!!!!
My driving, I get 13.5 to 14 in town and 17 to 18 on highway. Anything over 2000 rpms, mileage goes down fast.
F250, well lets just say it bites, between 11 and 12 in town and 14 on the highway.
I have on 00 V-10, and at times wish I had opted for the diesel, I am still considering buying an 04 before they go away, but to answer your question, if driving syle doesn't change much ie not towing the last 1/2 tank, my OH monitor usually shows 0 miles when my light comes on take or give a little. What I don't get is the miles to empty at the beginning is about right, but somewhere I make up for the 5 gal left in the tank when the light goes on. IE I start with 14*45 or 630 miles, but at 560 miles I am at 0 to empty. I usually get about 13-14 @70 w/o towing, 8-9 with the camper back there, 6 if I get in a hurry, oh well
