What is the housing behind the water pump. I have a coolant leak that looks like where it mounts to the intake, right behind where the elbow for the thermostat come down. Looks like there is a gasket there. The housing is part of the oil res that is above the water pump. Does water go through that and how do you remove it?
Are you referring to the timing cover,as it is commonly called? Riffraff Diesel: Ford OEM Front Cover
Yes, coolant and oil both flow thru it. There is a large o-ring type gasket that seals it to the block. Removal requires removing the oil pan to access the oil pump suction tube bolts that mount to the cover from inside.
Can you take a picture of the leak and post it?
I will try and get picture tonight. But the front housing is it. It is leaking right where the hole that goes through top right where thermostat housing part of water pump is. Looks like it is leaking where front housing connects and the water runs through that hole.
Have you cleaned/dried that area and checked it after the cooling system was hot and pressurized to verify this? Did you check the bolt tightness of all the cover/water pump bolts? W/P 18 ft-lbs...Cover bolts 15 ft-lbs
Dried of best I could and then drove it to let let it come up to operating temp and then checked. Looked like the leak was there. Tried to tighten the bolts on water pump in that area. Where are the bolts that hold the front cover on. Did not see them, just the ones that held on the water pump.
Looks like the two bolts that go through the water pump hold the puml and the housing onto the block. I tightened those already and it is still leaking. Looks like a major job to replace the gasket for the front cover. I think I will look some more before deciding to tackle that.
There are a few above and below the water pump. Those bolts won't really have much of an effect on sealing the coolant area. I just threw that spec in there if you were going to check them.
Quick question? Are you working on a 7.3, or a 6.0 ? You posted in the 7.3 forum, but you have a 2004 truck in you profile. The info, I gave you, is for the 7.3.
