Hello, i have a 1993 f150 6cyl. I was having issues with coolant leaks. I replaced the water pump and my thermo housing noticed that after filling the system, i had water leaking from what looks to be the front of my oil pan before the engine was even running. it doesnt look like i have water in my oil. also after letting it run for a while water was shooting out from under my thrmo housing. i replaced used the standard gasket and gasket sealer when i installed the new parts. another question, are water pumps directional? on models with a/c the water pump and fan turn clockwise where on models without a/c (like mine) turn counter clockwise. at least thats what i gather from the belt diagram. it seemed as if there was too much pressure at the thermostat. this would not help me with the leaking from the oilpan, but more of a "i would like to know". i read somewhere that a problem like this may be a result of a failed timing cover gasket, but not sure if it would apply to my make and model... any help would be appreciated. thanks.
Maybe the thermostat housing is warped. As for the oil pan, it sounds like maybe some "dribble" left over from when you changed the pump and thermostat might have run down the block to the oil pan.
If I had just replaced the water pump, and the thermostat housing and when filling it I saw leaking from the front, I would assume I had made an error when installing the water pump. There are a lot of ways to cause a leak. Over the years I have done most of them. Failing to really clean the old gasket and sealer, scratching or gouging the surface when cleaning, gasket slipping out of place during instal, over tightening or tightening in the wrong order, any of these can cause a leak. there is probably a couple more I have screwed up but try not to remember. One of the few smart things I did was to purchase a gasket scrapper, and NEVER USE IT FOR ANYTHING ELSE. Actually I purchased a second one. That was after I learned NEVER USE IT FOR ANYTHING ELSE.
Think I just had a flash back to another oops method. Something about manifold, thermostat, gasket, instead of manifold, gasket, thermostat. Yep that leaked real good.
Good Luck Frank
I would check to make sure you didn't puncture any of the hoses when you put them back on. I just replaced my water pump in my 93 F150 5.0 and when I pushed the hose on for the heater it punctured the hose and I had antifreeze all over the bottom of the engine. At first it looked like it was coming from the thermostat housing since I replaced that as well.
Just a thought you may what to check your hoses as well.
It's very easy for the thermostat to leak when you put it back together. There is a small groove in the neck where the t-stat goes, and if you don't scrape all the hard crud out, it won't sit right and it will leak. Been there, done that.
