starting problems, engine turns over but wont fire!! help
okay so my truck was running as good as always and i stopped at someones house the truck was off for about half an hour, then i went to leave, got in and started it. it idled for about 15 seconds then quit. i started it again and backed out of the driveway put it in gear and it died out again. then it died twice on my drive each time for about 15 mins then would start again, then on the way home it was dieing out. then it quit all together and wont start at all so i left it parked on the road for the night and it got towed has anyone had these problems? its getting fuel to the filter, but the filter looks dirty, but it should still run PLEASE HELP
IPR maybe? mine died going down the road one day and long story short the IPR was dirty. Took it out and apart and cleaned it suck it back in and running ever since (year or two). Same thing though mine would crank and not fire. Stealership tried to tell me the HPOP was bad and would get it going again for around 2k. I spent about 30min and a partial can of brake cleaner
A bad CPS would be my first guess. The IPR could also be dirty or sticking like mentioned already. Could be a fuel issue but that would normally present itself while under load. Does your SES light come on? Do you have any way to read the codes?
Ipr (injector pressure regulator) certainly could cause this problem. Requires a fairly specific tool to remove, I made one out of a 1 1/8" socket and a welder. CPS could also cause this, this is easy and relatively cheap to check/fix. There is a good thread on this site on how to remove the ipr. The electromagnet on my IPR failed and caused the exact same problems, so be aware of that too. UVCH (under valve cover harness) most certainly could create these symptoms, do search for 50cent mod. Wire harness running over drivers side valve cover could be worn and created a short. Do you have a tuner or chip installed, make sure contacts are secure and clean. Unlikely fuel filter, but change it anyway. I change mine yearly. Others surely will chime in with more/better ideas.
no the SES light doesnt come on and i have no way to read codes, checked the fuse and its good, oil level is good, and yes i have a superchips 1705 programmer on high performance mode, there was a plug or sensor or something like that on the back of the fuel filter bowl that was unplugged, i plugged it back in and nothing changed, does anyone no what that plug is for? the connection is really dirty and its hard to clean it, wondering if this could be my problem, also i can wiggle my fuel lines (were the connect to the fuel filter bowl) and if i push slightly i can hear what sounds like air coming out through the fitting but its not leaking diesel..?? thanks for the help, all comments are appreciated
That plug is most likely fuel bowl heater. More than likely, it was unplugged by the previous owner b/c it is either bad or they were trying to prevent it quitting in the road and unplugged it. The fuse that powers the fuel bowl heater is the same one that powers the pcm so the truck will shut off if it blows. Leaving it unplugged will not cause you any problems.

You can read codes with the SC programmer. There is a list of brief definitions for each code in the instruction manual. A code reader is all mine is good for now. My nephew sold the truck that it was VIN locked to before I could remove the programming.
If anyone is interested in the SC programmer and would be willing to send it in for unlocking/updating, send me a PM. All I ask is you cover the shipping cost.

If the PO unplugged the fuel bowl heater because it was bad and you plugged it back in you now will for sure have a blown fuse also. Might just want to unplug it and check fuses before continuing with the trouble shoot. just sayin!
checked all of my fuses and there all good, im going to start with the cps and see if i get anywere with that. i plugged in my tuner and checked the codes, the definitions dont make much sence to me. im new to ford, and new to diesel trucks, so any info anyone has is appreciated, im just learning
