How loud is your diesel Ex
My truck is super loud. It is completely stock - nothing done to the engine/exhuast system. But, hubby has an '08 F-350 super duty. His super duty is super quiet. Mine rumbles down the road - I mean you can hear a noticeable difference in the two!! Can't hear it in the cab with the windows up but quite loud when you are outside the truck. So much so that you can't carry on a normal conversation standing next to it without raising your voice a bit.
His '08 doesn't have the power that the Ex has either. Are those newer engines that much weaker and quieter? Or is mine just over the top loud?
Just wonderin'.

7.3's seem to be the loudest with the 6.0 in a close 2nd.
I was at the gas station last night & was parked on the other side of the pump from a running 7.3 F250 while the owner fueled up. My God, it was loud! I couldnt hear my V10 at all before I shut it off. To be quite honest it was a little annoying. Just didnt feel like hearing a bunch of noise and racket at that time. Normally, it doesnt bother me but I just didnt feel like hearing it then.

Didn't Ford change the injection method after the 7.3? I seem to recall reading something about 10 years ago that the company was claiming a change that would result in a quieter diesel.
Something to keep in mind that it is time for exhaust leaks to start popping up due to simple age. Even a small leak can result in a noticeable increase in sound.

The 6.0 used to be relatively quiet when they were first available in 2003 with Pilot Injection. Not long after PI had to be disabled due to some issues it caused. With a HEUI injector system, it's hard to keep things quiet.
Your husband's 2008 is a common rail truck which makes it relatively easy to keep quiet.
The newer 2008 motors are quieter and stronger, the only reason it feels like it does have the power your X has is because of the DPF or Diesel Particulate Filter. Without the DPF, those trucks run and pull hard.

Lisa, if your hubby is looking to make his louder and gain quite a bit of power too, check out this link. From everything I've read, they seem to be the king of 6.4 PSD tuning.
Spartan Diesel Technologies
After going with the Spartan on the F-450, we won't be going back to stock, unless of course it would have to go to the dealer for something.

My 05 6.0L is what I'd call fairly loud, but its not industrial diesel loud. Like most have said, when cold, it can wake the dead but after I switched to synthetic and by running Diesel Kleen mine quieted down quite a bit. Once warm though I'd say mine just sitting and idling is not much louder than a gasser. I'm bone stock, with a turbo back like I'm planning on getting I know that will louden it up a bit.
I think the technology in newer diesels is amazing and sure I'd love it if my motor was a CRD and not have to deal with HPOP issues but all the emissions control tech on the new motors seriously rob them of power. That's the cost of progress, I guess. Its what caused many to say the 6.0 is "inferior" to the 7.3.
