Afternoon fellas,
More of a Bronco forum guy myself, but figured I'd run a question by some specialist in this area.
My dad is building a 351C. He has the boss block (4 bolt mains) and some Boss heads (4v HUGE port). He is going to be putting this motor in a 70 mustang mach-1. He wants to build a motor with about 500 hp. He is getting it bored .20 over and looking at a stroker kit. He is not wanting to stroke it much, maybe 393, or even less (383-ish).
Can anyone recommend a good kit with crank, pistons and rods. The whole shebang? What companies should we look at. So far, it seems that Scat and Eagle are the only companies I'm seeing that make a kit. Does anyone have experience with either of these? As I understand it, they are Chineese, is there any made in the USA companies that have these type of kits? Do you guys (or gals) know of anything special we should be worried about?
Coast High Performance: Ford, Chevy, Stroker Kits, Short Blocks, Long Blocks, Crate Engines I was concidering getting one of their kits, but decided to go with the Scat forged crank,Callies Compstar rods, and JE pistons on my 351C. It is + .020,3.85 stroke,10.3 compression.Comes out to a 391 c.i..It is going in a `70 Fastback also. The builder @ Houston Engine and Balancing,Jeff, suggested the Scat crank because IHO they are machined a little better and easier to balance, and the Callies rods because they hold up better than either the Scat or Eagle rods that he has witnessed failure after so many drag race passes. JE makes a quality product and the first thing I noticed was how light they are. Also he advised against anything greater than 3.85 due to the piston coming out too far at the bottom of the bore on the down stroke for high speed stabilaty. With this set-up and a roller cam I`m figuring around 550 HP w/race fuel. The bottom end is good for 800. So far I have about 5 grand in it.
this is another company that builds a kit for this application. speedomotive been around for along time. if really serious give scott main a call at www.mpgheads.com very smart cleveland guy and knows these engines well. he specializes in fords in englewood colo.
since your getting serious with this paticular build? what have you done to your lube system? upgrades are required once you go up in rpm's and hrspwr.
Well so much for the research! I guess he went ahead and ordered the Scat kit yesterday from Summit. Seems to be fairly decent. We are aware that the oil system will need to be upgraded. I have read somewhere that just using a high volume oil pump will be enough. But I also remember that it seemed pretty easy to do something else with it. I haven't checked that part out in awhile to be honest.
He is not building a race car. But it won't be driven everyday either. He really wanted the Boss heads. I tried to talk him into the aftermarket, but thats just not what he wanted. He doesn't want it to look like the motor was built up.
I appreciate the fast and detailed responses. Keep them coming with any other snags or tricks y'all have found.
www.mpgheads.com sells a restrictor kit for the cleveland and windage tray crankscraper bolt on situation. or speak with tim meyer on some of his cam bearing upgrades for the cleveland. things to consider when upping the hrspwr. i use both these guys on my cleveland and 400 prpject and bigblock. mpgheads is closer to me so use scott often for ford projects. knowledge is power and scott and tim have lots of dyno time with these engines.
