My son tells me his/my truck wont start and grinds when he hits the key and tells me its going to need a new starter. I kinda grin because due to the FTE brotherhood I immediately know what the problem is.
Sure enough after 140K the starter bolts backed out. (It has the 2 bolt starter). I decided to drop the starter a little bit to clean the flange before reinstallation and the freaking wire to the starter broke . Furtunately I had a lug and some heatshrink I reinstalled the starter bolts using some blue locktight.
Any bets on how long the blue locktight is going to hold before I am retightening them?
Hey Costa.I check mine everytime I am under it.I had the bolts backing out problem as well. The last time it was time for a starter rebuild or a new starter.I ended up buying the gear reduction(3 bolt)starter from Ford.Starts great and has stayed tight.
Bolt size:10mmx1.50mm pitchx40mm long
Ford Gear reduction starter:F4TZ-11002-ARM
At over 190k miles and 11 yrs (10/00), my starter bolts are still tight. I wonder what causes this issue with some; other than not tightened right from the beginning. I think the blue loctite and proper torque should do the trick until it's ready for removal.

I with you there, wrong torque setting on the engine assembly line one day? But if I only have to tighten em up every 140k i guess im ok with that!
Proper torque? hmmm I tightened up as best as I could by hand with a 3/8" ratchet then put the cheater pipe on it and gave it a just little extra!
Thanks for the part number for the gear reduction starter Barry.
First thing I thought of when he told me it was bad was Springerpop saying take it to the rebuild shop but hopefully she's got a few more starts on her.
I've always just labeled it as it just what the best due (Harely's are also notorious for loosening bolts). My starter hasn't loosened yet, but my flange on the front of the rear driveshaft has loosened twice, a bolt loosened and fell out of my right rear brake calliper, and my grille guard has to be tightened every oil change
